Subject: Flooding in Ireland
If this doesn't tug at your heart strings nothing will.
We've all seen the faces of those ravaged by the floods of Sri Lanka, New
Orleans . . . and now in Britain & Ireland
This 'award-winning' photograph of the recent flood waters rising in Ireland
captures the horror and suffering there.
Keep these people in your thoughts and prayers.
OK, I know. You were all thinking I forgot about big brew, right?
Here's the scoup of stuff. Unfortunately, I can't attach the spreadsheet but
I will include the info.
There are going to be three shifts. Each is headed by a master brewer and as
many assistants as they desire. I am copying the info in the hopes you can
accept HTML. Sorry if you hate that format but I have little choice.
Thanks to all of the donations and comps, we are able to hold the price per
gallon about $2.00. Remember, bring your sanitized container, yeast culture,
and good weather. See you all on May 3rd.
I am sure there are many people that do not receive this message so if you
notice someone on the list below, please forward a copy.
Let me know if we need to juggle the schedule. A few master brewers have
afternoon committments. As always, times and schedules are relative and
tentative. Recipes will be printed at the specific stations.
Thanks
Rick Oftel
Note two openings for Mild ownership:
Okay-now that is truly IS spring, will you finally believe that people play
baseball OUTSIDE in MN? I'm serious-they do!
Tomorrow is the last chance to e-mail me with ticket requests for the
Thursday, May 22nd Saints game. All the info is once again copied below.
Sales are shy of our usual 40 seats this year, so on Wednesday, I'll
probably be turning back some of the tickets before the club has to pony up
for them. Please let me know RIGHT NOW if you're planning to attend.
Thanks!
It's time once again to sign up for the club's tailgating party at Midway
Stadium with the Saint Paul Saints.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 22nd. That's when the MHBA takes over
a tailgating spot at 4:00, quaffs copious homebrews, grills and grills and
grills some more, then staggers in to catch a few innings of baseball
without getting rowdy enough to get tossed out. (and at the SAINTS, one can
really never get TOO rowdy!)
When you realize that you do not want to miss out, please send $12 per
ticket (payable to MHBA) to John Longballa, 1211 Minnehaha Ave W, Saint
Paul, 55104. Everyone in attendance receives a free Saints baseball.
The club picks up the cost of the tailgate spot, everyone brings food and
drink, and select volunteers bring grills.
This has become a SERIOUSLY fun event, so do not miss it! In years past
there has been cross-dressing, Pedal-Pubbing, and cheesburgers made with
Krispie Kremes! Families and non-homebrewing friends are very welcome.
Please send your ticket money now, so that we can plan accordingly.
Thanks,
John

Fellow Judges;
The Wisconsin State Fair Homebrew competition will be held on Saturday, May 17th. This is a BJCP sanctioned event run by the Beer Barons of Milwaukee homebrew club. We would love to have participation by BJCP judges from around the Region.
The competition will be held in the Tommy Thompson Building on the Wisconsin State Fair Grounds in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee. The day includes a potluck lunch that we share with the Wisconsin Vintner's Association, who hold their competition at the same time in another area of the building.
The main judging session will be held on Saturday. We will likely hold a small session on Friday evening to ease the load on Saturday.
If you are interested in entering the competition, you can get all the details at www.beerbarons.org
Please let me know if you would like to help us out. If you know anyone who is not yet in the BJCP but is interested in learning by participating as a judge or steward, let them know that they are welcome to join us.
I can be contacted at the e-mail address or phone number listed below.
Thank You;
Dan Schlosser

Calling all beer lovers, filmmakers,
and beer-loving wannabe filmmakers!
Attention Summit Fans-now is the time to show off your mad creative skills! We want you to make a film, 5 minutes or less, featuring a Summit beer product placement. Pretty simple, really. Whether your films are subtle or wildly obvious, high production or low, avant-garde or documentary, animation or puppets, novice or auteur, all are welcome in our first ever Summit Beer Movie Contest.
Why should you do this? Besides that fact that you love us (really, shouldnt that be enough?). Well, were giving away big BIG prizes. First place winner receives $1000, 12 cases of Summit beer, and a private party at the brewery. Second and third place get prizes too, visit thesocialelement.com to get all the contest details.
What if you dont win? Does it still pay to play? Why, of course! All entrants will be invited to the screening party at the brewery and all submissions are eligible for placement on thesocialelement.com website. That is worth an afternoon of filming, yes?
So what are you waiting for? Grab some friends, some beer and make your movie.
Pints. Camera. Action!

Summit Brewing Company Kicks Off Beer Movie Contest
Calling all beer lovers, filmmakers, and beer-loving wannabe filmmakers
ST. PAUL, MN - (April 14, 2008) - On April 17th, Summit
Brewing Company will start accepting entries for the first ever Summit Beer
Movie Contest. The contest asks Minnesotans to make a short film, 5 minutes
or less, that includes a Summit beer product placement. Since the brewery's
start back in 1986, Summit has supported the vibrant creative community of
Minnesota through sponsorships and donations. Now is the chance for that
creativity to converge with the art of craft beer in the form of a Summit
beer movie.
"We want to see the creativity that our beer drinkers have hidden within
them. This is not just a call for a beer commercial-we really want to see
what people can come up with, whether they be a Summit beer drinker
professing their love or a budding filmmaker with a story to tell," said
Mark Stutrud, CEO and founder of Summit Brewing Company.
The beer movie contest is part of Summit's newest website launched this past
summer -the interactive, video-driven, www.thesocialelement.com. This
supplemental website was developed to tell the stories of both Summit
drinkers and the brewery itself. With videos ranging from Nordic battle
reenactors, to free runners, to Lake Superior surfers, and a weekly blog
from Summit employees, the website explores what brings people together in
an entertaining, visual format.
All films and entrants from the beer movie contest are eligible for
placement on www.thesocialelement.com as well as attendance to the brewery
screening party, with the top three films being awarded prizes. A jury of
Summit employees, Paul Creager of the Square Lake Film & Music Festival, and
Chris Pennington of the 10-Second Film Festival, will judge all submissions.
The first place winner will receive $1000 cash, 12 cases of Summit beer, and
a private party at the brewery. Second place receives $500 cash, 6 cases of
Summit beer, and $50 in Summit merchandise. Third place receives $250 cash,
3 cases of beer, and $25 in Summit merchandise. Winning films will also be
shown at the Square Lake Film <http://www.solsticefestival.org/> & Music
Festival on August 16. The contest runs April 21-May 27, with winners to be
announced on or before June 9. Further contest guidelines can be found at
www.thesocialelement.com.
So get out your video cameras, your creativity, your favorite Summit beer,
and make a Summit Beer Movie!

Summit Brewing Company was founded in St. Paul, MN in 1986, and has stayed
close to its roots, serving the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. It is
currently available in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa,
Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
Colorado and Montana. Summit produces eleven varieties of premium craft
beer, including six year-round and five seasonal beers. In 2004, the
brewery began producing limited production, draft only beers, offered
primarily in the greater metropolitan area of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Since its inception, the company's sales have consistently outpaced the
industry, highlighted by significant annual sales growth over the past seven
years.
Has anyone checked out the new Cicerone Certification program offered by the Brewer's Association? A Cicerone is the new term for a "beer sommelier", someone who recommends beers to diners and customers. They have a 10-question sample exam you can take for free.
http://www.cicerone.org
I passed the "Certified Beer Server" (CBS) exam - which involves a fee. Anyone with a firm BJCP knowledge and who reads the CBS syllabus should be able to pass it fairly easily. The syllabus for "Certified Cicerone" and "Master Cicerone" looks like it's a bit harder.
It'll be interesting to see if the beverage/restaurant industry gloms on to this idea. I think it would certainly help to move the industry towards more varied and flavorful beers.
