Greetings fellow brewers,
We now have enough committed brewers to perform a clubwide yeast experiment.
The experiment is a comparison of British ale yeasts, using a standard
British ale recipe. All interested brewers are encouraged to participate,
and the more data we have the more accurate our results will be. The
results will be written up for posting on the MHBA website, and hopefully
for publication in Zymurgy.
This is a great chance to learn about an important class of ale yeasts, and
will help all of us craft fine British ales. If you are interested in
participating, please sign up (by emailing me at adam_stern(a)hotmail.com)
before Sunday, May 13th. We will aim to complete brewing by the end of May,
and taste the ales in one or two sessions in June and/or July.
Thanks for your time, I look forward to hearing from you, and happy brewing!
-Adam

Bryon-
It's a buck a gallon if you're one of the lucky 24 people getting 5 gallons of wort from the Big Brew. It's a buck or two to donate to chicken wings, if you want to partake. That's about it. Bring a dish or snack to share also.
Anyone who wants to bring their OWN brewing equipment to bump up the gallon-age of total Big Brew wort made is welcome to do so as well.
Rick gets one of these lists, so he'll see it. You don't have to RSVP that you're coming though - everyone's welcome.

Does anyone know how much $$ to bring for the Big Brew?
What style is being brewed?
How do you contact Rick so I can let him know that I am coming?
So many questions, so little time!!

Rick and Dawn have generously hosted the Big Brew for the last two years,
and the club wouldn't THINK of letting them lose money on it. I'm sure
everyone who attends is willing to cough up a buck or two for Rick's famous
"Sterling Wings", and the Minnesota Home Brewers Association will cover any
shortfall. Hopefully some of you will bring some amazing side dishes to go
along with them!
Of course those who are taking home wort to ferment at a paltry $1 per
gallon are getting the advantage of a Rick-Oftel-All-Grain-Extravaganza
without any of the work! (What's a kit cost these days... $30 for five
gallons??) It's the "Big Brew" norm for those bringing wort home to pay
for their fair share of its production. To the recollection of past
presidents, the club did not pay for "free wort" in previous years.
At any rate, as with all of Rick and Dawn's events, this one will be REALLY
fun! Hope everyone can make it!

Anybody have a few pounds of rice hulls you are willing to donate for
the Summer Wheat?
Let me know in advance and bring them by on Saturday.
Thanks
Rick

OK, enough of the corny stuff. Here is the last announcement.
The big brew is pretty set for Saturday. Anything can happen between
now and then and one very important thing is I will become a Grandpa.
Now that this is out, I am requesting a little more assistance from the
club.
Food: As previously mentioned, I will be making BBQ chicken around
noon. I may not have enough food to feed 75 or 100 people and this is
where you come in. I have a table setup and would welcome food
contributions. Possibly some veggies, cheese, maybe even a hotdish or
something. Anything you can whip up. Please include serving spoons,
forks, etc.
Utensils and Plates: Some time ago, there was a stash of plastic
plates, forks, knives etc that were owned by the MHBA. Does anyone have
a clue where these are? If you have a clue please let me know that you
can bring them. I don't mind purchasing more but would rather use up
what we already have.
Fermenters and Sanitizer: I am setting up a simple drain station over
by brew station #2. It is a bucket and hose arrangement that simply
diverts sanitizer away from our yard. Please use this device. If you
want a hot rinse, use the sink in the basement brewery.
Wort: Originally, the plan was to use club funds to cover the expense
of wort production. This would cover the cost of propane, natural gas,
hops, purchased grain, and a little mileage. This had worked well in
the past but was nixed by club. I am requesting a very modest donation
for bitter wort like $1.00 per gallon. I know, it sounds like highway
robbery but what if you get a discount like: buy five, get one free?
(Doesn't this sounds like Granite City?)
Thanks again very much for your active participation. We look forward
to this event. Bring your fermenters, a chair, and a glass and have a
GREAT time!!!
Sincerely,
Rick and Dawn Oftel

Maibock Release
Tuesday May 1st!
We will be celebrating the first day of May with the release of our annual
Maibock. This Tuesday enjoy $2 glasses of Maibock from 4-8pm. The kitchen
will also be conjuring up some German menu fare to go along with the
release. Our outdoor patio is now open, so come on up and enjoy a glass of
Maibock this Tuesday! (**note: there will be no cask this week due to the
Maibock release party)
Maibock (8%abv): This traditional German lager is brewed back in Febuary to
give it an appropriate amount of time to age - it is one of 3 lagers that we
do every year because of the aging time. We brewed this beer in the
traditional double decoction brewing style that releases a multitude of
malty flavors charachteristic of the style. A fiery orangish hue from the
use of German Munich malt and hopped with German Hallertau. We cold lagered
this beer for 4 months to allow the flavors to come together, it was well
worth the wait!
Arborfest this Friday
Arborfest is this Friday May 4th - Kagin Commons on the Macalester campus.
Come on out to a great beer festival and enjoy all the best that the local
brewing scene has to offer all under one roof. Ticket price includes access
