Congratulations are in order for Gera Exire LaTour. With the results of
a recent (OK not so recent, it was in December but the grading was just
finished) retake of the BJCP exam Gera scored well enough to advance to
the BJCP National rank.
Further, as part of the December exam results we have some new judges:
Robert Bullen
Eric Bierman
Robert Gronemann
Scott Brown
There were also a few partial retakes by folks but that alone wasn't
enough to change their BJCP rank.

One green rain jacket was left behind from the big brew.

Yet another good reason to use a real kettle.
Stainless is a pour conductor of heat.
Therefore there are lage temperature gradients in the SS.
These gradients generate tremndous thermal stress.
High temperatures at the "ring" can result in the
chrome migrating out of solution w/ the nickel and the
iron, making for a brittle material.
Too bad John Isenhauer isn't around to tell us
about the keg ring that he branded into his carpet
with a converted keg full of wart. Boil was long over,
but the rings was still hot enough to burn the carpet.
Cheers,
Jim

Something potentially very dangerous happened on National Homebrew Day
in Michigan. The kids around in the earlier photos makes this incident
scarier. Be forewarned!

For those who use converted kegs as a boil kettle see this important
modification to avoid possible injury.:

Dear Brewers
I am working on a new television series for HGTV called Man Land. It is
about places in the home that men carve out for themselves such as the shed,
basement, attic or garage in order to house their passion project - in the
case of your members, their brewery.
Can you help me to get the word out to your members? I am looking for guys
who have outfitted the ultimate brewery in their homes to appear on our
show.
Please have any interested members contact me at 8183824312 or write me at
this email address.
Thanks so much for your help. You have a great site!

Greetings,
Does anyone have any good shots from the Arbor Fest?
If they're "people" shots, please provide the names.
Bonus point for captions:
e.g. Bob the Brewer discusses hop Subtlety with Surly CEO Omar Ansari.
We pay for the pics we publish in the GLBN. I need these ASAP.
Cheers,
Jim

DETAILS:
Rod Picott was a great surprise to us. Rod sent us his CD, and on listening
to him, we knew we had to book him for our house concert series. Rod's
gravelly baritone draws instant attention to his thoughtful and evocative
lyrics, and his guitar provides just the right number of notes to provide
accompaniment.
Rod grew up in Berwick, Maine, with influences so diverse as John Philip
Sousa, Ray Charles, The Clash and Patti Smith. In 1994 Rod moved to
Nashville, where he soon started a showcase called Rod Picott's Fireside
Whiskey Hour. Gotta love it.
Please join us for a great night of music with Rod Picott on Saturday, May
12, 2007 starting at 8pm.

First I (we) would like to thank everyone for helping with the Groen's first two actual brews. With some quick fixes and modifications at Rick's the 2nd batch had a good run off. The first batch had a big boil over, the best way to break it in. For the second batch the boil over was minimized by venting the steam in to Rick's home made steam whistle, what a blast!
So thanks to every one that participated.
For the record we made 4 x 40 gallon batches. (Two on Jim V system and two on Jim I system) Most (all) was distributed in ~5 gallon lots. So there was a very good participation. Gera also did a 5 gallon batch. So or site made ~165 gallons total. Our site as I understand it is not on the AHA registered list. So if we want our wort to be counted in the AHA grand total someone need to contact AHA.
Thanks to everyone for making the MHBA big brew such an enjoyable event.
Jim Imbertson
P.S. how do you get on the barn's email list?
