We brewed this weekend and wanted to make a dent on the seemingly ever growing inventory of Rahr Malt. (It kind of goes like this... do I want to use Meussdoerfer Pils or Rahr for my base malt of my Czech Pils? Hmmm... I vote Meussdoerfer.)
So we made the commitment to finally put a % of the Rahr in a mash -- roughly 45%.
We start brewing and set up the sparge, and the color looks like mud (this is prior to adding Black Malt to the mash. Long story... not going to go there).
Does Rahr malt always look like this?
Any information appreciated about the use, cleaning, and CO2 charging
for old Hamm's 2-1/8 gallon aluminum tanks. These tanks have an
integral CO2 cylinder/regulator inside the removable rear cap. The
assembly is held together with a large snap ring. It appears they may
have been cleaned without disassembly and one of the holes on the CO2
dispenses was used to recharge the cylinder.
I have 4 in good condition and also have a decent condition Styrofoam
ice holder with same Hamm's logo's on the outside.
Thanks!

Subject: Anniversary Weekend!
<http://www.barleyjohns.com/images/barleyheader.gif>
It's our 7th Anniversary!
Friday March 16th
We will be celebrating our 7th Anniversary this weekend. Friday is the
official date of our opening and as a Thank You we will be featuring our
newly released Anniversary Ale. For $7 (7 years...) you can buy a Barley
John's Imperial Pint glass (20oz) filled with our Anniversary Ale - you keep
the glass. Refills on the Anniversary Ale in the Imperial Pint glass are
regular price all night long (25% more beer!)
Anniversary Ale (6.7%abv): Our Annual Anniversary Ale is a Strong Irish Red
Ale. We brew this one to celebrate both our Anniversary and the closely
aligned St. Patrick's Day holiday. Hopped with English Fuggle hops and
fermented with an Irish Ale strain, this strong red enjoys a dry bready
finish from the use of flaked barley in the mash. The perfect beer to
accompany our St. Patrick's Day feast!
St. Patrick's Day
Saturday March 17th
We will be featuring our traditional St. Patty's Day Irish Feast - Corned
Beef and Cabbage, Soda Bread, Lamb Stew etc. We may not be O'Barley John's
but we will be as close to an Irish Pub as we can be on Saturday! Be sure to
wash it all down with a pint of our Anniversary Ale!

If you're planning on going to NHC in June, please let me know. We need
to very quickly decide if we want to have a table at Club Night. This
can be shared with other clubs and I'll check with the MN clubs and PHC
(if they don't respond to this note). We need to rotate who is at the
table so everyone can mingle around the room. We're also supposed to
have a theme.....but we can discuss that later.
Info on Club Night is at the NHC web site.
http://www.beertown.org/events/hbc/index.html
If we do Club Night, I'd suggest skipping hosting at the Hospitality
Suite. That needs more beer and more time.
It would also help to know the following:
who is going? you / spouse/ friend
flying or driving - we need to get some kegs there if we do club night
if you're driving, how many kegs can you manage? we need to bring taps,
etc, but supposedly not CO2
when are you're getting there - just so we can meet for tours, etc
Feel free to forward this to other clubs and interested parties in
Minnesota (and a few select people in Wisconsin).
FYI - Joan and I are flying and will spending the previous Saturday
through Tuesday/Wednesday in Boulder
thanks!

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them...
well, I have others. Groucho Marx
Midwest Homebrewer of the Year standings have been updated with results
from last weekends Drunk Monk competition. The lead has changed hands
again with the Leviathan of Lagering, the Behemoth of Brewing, the
Colossus of Carbonation leaping into the lead. Can you guess who?

Don't forget the next event in the circuit, the BOSS Challange:

You can now stop trying to train the dog to fetch you a beer.

(Don't forget to watch the video.)
Very cool project, even if his choice of beer could use improvement.

The biggest congratulations go to Al Boyce who as of the points he earned
judging at MCAB a couple of weeks ago is now a BJCP Grand Master Judge.
Really good job Al. He only needs another 50 judging experience points
for the next level :-)
Congratulations are also in order for a couple of local judges that were
recently promoted to BJCP National Judge.
Jesse Stremcha became a National judges with the experience points he
earned at the Upper Mississippi Mash-Out.
Todd Murley became a National judge with the experience points he earned
at MCAB.
Good job everyone.

This is "sort of" off topic for the club list, so I apologize in advance.
Most of you already know this, so bear with me.
Last year in February Dave Trautmann forwarded a picture of the
"Fietscafe", a 17-person pedal-powered bar, to the Prairie Homebrewing
Companions email list, and I thought it was cool, so I forwarded it to the
Minnesota Homebrewers list. Eric Olson saw it, and started researching it,
and long story short, he and I are importing one from Holland! It arrives
on March 27, and we'll be having a "Grand Opening" for it sometime late
March or early April.
Until then, I'm forwarding our newsletter for our "Friends of the
PedalPub". If you want to get on the list, drop us an email. Also, visit
our website: http://www.PedalPub.com. Feel free to forward this as you
wish.
Thanks!
- Al

FRIENDS OF THE PEDAL PUB - MARCH, 2007
MARCH 2007
PEDAL PUB IS ON THE WAY!
Exciting news! The PedalPub is on it's way to America! It was loaded
into a shipping container last Thursday and will be floating across the
Atlantic in a few days. We expect it to arrive on March 27th.. If you
wish to see some photos of the PedalPub being loaded up for shipping and
leaving the factory, check out the new GALLERY section of the PedalPub
website - http://www.PedalPub.com . If you belong to any email lists for
groups that might be interested - help us spread the word! Forward a
photo from the gallery, or our email address to them.
TRIAL RUNS - GET ON BOARD!
At the end of March we are going to be conducting some trial runs on our
set routes (Calhoun, Nicollet Mall, Stone Arch Bridge, and Nordeast) -
if you are interested in helping us out, drop us an email. NOTE: There
are hills on some of the routes that we're not sure if the PedalPub is
capable of climbing, so you must be fit and willing to help push if
necessary!
WHO'S GOING TO BE FIRST???
We are now taking reservations for April, the big question is: Who's
going to be the historic FIRST group to ride the PedalPub in America? If
you are interested in renting it for your group, you can click on the
"BOOK A TOUR" button at our website, or email us at INFO(a)PEDALPUB.COM .
PARADES AND FESTIVALS
The PedalPub will be perfect as a float in local parades and festivals -
we need your help! When is the local parade in your community or
neighborhood? What is it called? Do you know a business that would be
perfect for using the PedalPub as their float? Most parades require
permits filed months in advance, so we're working on this NOW for this
summer and fall. Let us know! We'd love to be in your communities parade
or festival!
GRAND OPENING PARTY!
We're going to be hosting a Grand Opening for PedalPub in America, with
free rides and all sorts of surprises! Look for our next email if you'd
like to attend!
We have started this "Friends of the PedalPub" to keep you informed of
our progress-and in an attempt to continue to tap your amazing
creativity and talent. We will probably send out an email about once
every three to four weeks or so. If you want to be REMOVED from the
list, just drop us a note and we'll take you off. If you know anyone
else who would like to get on our list, have them send an email to:
