Standings for the MHY have been updated to reflect this past weekend's
contest in Duluth, MN. Can you believe someone on Minnesota's Iron makes
saison? I couldn't. <insert joke about lite beer drinking in-laws here> ;-)
Anyway, we have several new brewers from 3 different states jumping into
the top 10.

Don't forget the deadline for the next leg of the circuit this weekend
for BABBLE: http://babblehomebrewers.com/brewoff/
Drunk Monk is coming up next month: http://www.knaves.org/
With the landscape shifting to Illinois through June, look for some
Chicago heavy hitters to start seriously altering the playing field.
Seriously. Saison on the Iron Range? Who knew?

Steve,
Your original information is correct: FMBs are not beer. I think your
question is akin to asking whether Kraft non-fat cheese slices could be
considered cheddar or colby. If you look at the label carefully, you'll
find that they aren't even allowed to call it cheese! Same deal here.
FMBs are made from a beer base only for tax purposes since the tax on beer
is lower than for other bevs. As the product is all about profit and not
flavor or culture, you can rest assured that they are produced from whatever
sort of fermentation the producing plant can conduct quickly and cheaply. I
doubt seriously that there is a common approach to producing the base that
would be common to all producers.
That said: I believe they carbon filter whatever the base is to remove the
color and distinctive flavors anyway, so any consideration of flavor from
the original ingredients or fermentation is moot.
Personally, I think we all have a vested interest in distancing these things
from beer to the greatest extent possible.

I've been asked by the Great Northern Ale Stars to see about getting
some growlers from the Twin Cities brew pubs for the Brew-Ha-Ha this
weekend. But, I don't have time to solicit the brewpubs for donations
and to collect them before Friday.
So, it would be great if anyone going to Duluth this weekend could stop
by a Twin Cities brewpub and get a growler to bring to Duluth.
I'll try to get some cans from Surly and a growler from Town Hall and
Barley Johns. I'll get the Wild Brunette from BJ and something cask
conditioned from Town Hall.
I don't know if the competition has funds to reimburse for this, so
consider it your own donation, just make sure you get your growler back
at the end. It will help get this new competition off to a great start.
Thanks!

Congratulations to Curt Stock, 2006 Midwest Homebrewer of the Year. Curt
won a $100 Norther Brewer gift certificate and a hand-turned wooden mug.
We'll get some pics up on the web soonish as well as a signature recipe
from Curt.
The next leg of the circuit is this weekend in Duluth, MN:

Also, you probably still have time to get beers into the 3rd leg, which
takes place on 2/24 in Lincolnshire, IL.

Forwarded from John Longballa:
After 4-5 years of great service to the club as treasurer, Jeff Cotton
stepped down. Paul Dienhart was elected in Jeff's stead. Paul was also
elected as secretary (he was appointed last fall as secretary to finish
a term). Now all the membership issues and money will go through one
person. Gera Exire LaTour graciously accepted a nomination to be
president and is indeed the new club president! I am turning my
attention to my little boy and to my school board, where I was recently
elected president.
Al Boyce stayed on as VP, and Mike Moranz remained as a member-at-large.
Thanks to Harvie Holmes for hosting the meeting and presenting the
technical topic.
