Did anyone know that bars/restaurants can serve low alcohol versions of
beer?
I was at Lions Tap in Eden Prairie and asked why they had 2 taps for
Miller Light. Well, it's what they sell the most and it lets them
fill pitchers from one tap and glasses at the other so they don't hold
up the staff.
Anyway, I suggested they ditch the 2nd tap and get some better beer.
They said there's a limited number of 3.2 beers that pour well. Summit
EPA 3.2 does NOT pour well, they said.
No wonder, their Schells Dark and Killians don't taste quite right. It
would be nice if you knew up front what you were buying.

First off, I wanted to thank you very much for helping out with the Longshot judging last weekend. With 451 entries, we really needed your assistance, and you certainly came through for us!!
I wanted to give a special thanks to Luann Fitzpatrick for her incredible work arranging all of those entries on Friday night. There is simply no way that we would have been able to pull off the competition without her amazing organizational skills and all the time (late into the night) that was spent getting those entries into some semblance of order. You are a Goddess! (^8~
Another big thanks goes to Ted Grudzinski, who also put in a lot of time and effort, and fortunately brought along a computer and printer that allowed us to get the entry info out to the judges so that all could be done properly.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

A couple of true hop heads in this photo.
Taken the first Saturday in September at the Hop Festival in Zatec, Czech
Republic home of Zatec (a.k.a. Saaz) hops. The festival had a midway,
two sound stages, and 19 or 20 breweries each serving a few beers.
The beers were typically different gravities of Bohemian Pilsner or a Dark
Lager. The Pilsners were listed as 10, 11, 12, 13, or higher degrees
where that just means the OG in Plato. Multiply by 4 to convert to SG,
e.g., 11 is 1.044. The Dark Lagers are typically fairly sweet.
The hop heads made their crowns from the fresh Zatec hops being cut from
a small patch growing right in the town square.

Wanna Sample Fine Beer?
Do we really have to ask? Please mark your calendars for Saturday, October
7 for this year's Autumn Brew Review. The event, which will feature 100+
beers from more than 30 regional craft brewers, will again be held in
Downtown Minneapolis at Peavey Plaza (located on Nicollet Avenue and 11th
Street).
The event is a perfect venue to sample several unique flavors of fresh craft
beer, many of which are not available in liquor stores. Attendees receive a
commemorative glass and unlimited samples throughout the day. The event
also features live music from a variety of Twin Cities bands and several
food vendors.
Tickets are $25 in advance for general admission (1 p.m. - 6 p.m.) or $35
for VIP tickets (which allows you to enter the event one hour early to start
sampling and have more "quality time" with the brewmasters).
For tickets, visit www.mncraftbrew.org. (Please know that tickets are
limited so advanced ticket purchases are encouraged.)
All ticket proceeds benefit the Minnesota Craft Brewer's Guild, a non-profit
organization dedicated to promoting Minnesota breweries and the importance
of carrying on the tradition of brewing for future generations to enjoy.
Hope to see you October 7th!

Subject: ABR Brewers
Well, I was trying to update the website, but instead seemed to lose my
files. Hard to believe I have an engineering degree, isn't it???
Anyway, here are the breweries at this year's ABR. Hopefully Ryan can post
the list on mnbeer.com
O'Hara's Brew Pub & Restaurant
Barley John's Brewpub
Finnegan's Inc
Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery
Granite City
Breckenridge Brewery
Leinenkugel Brewing
Sierra Nevada Brewing
Fitger's Brewhouse
Surly Brewing
Rush River Brewing
Summit Brewing Company
White Winter Winery
Pig's Eye Beer Company
Viking Brewing Company
South Shore Brewery
Boulevard Brewing
Kalamazoo Brewing
City Brewing
August Schell Brewing
Lakefront Brewery
Avery Brewing
Aracadia Brewing
Great Divide Brewing
Gluek Brewing
Rock Bottom Brewery
The Brauhaus
New Holland Brewing
Muskie Capital
OK, so I finally have email again (welcome to 2006!) I'll try to catch up on
the questions for the ABR.
1. VIP tickets get you an hour extra (begins at noon), but more importantly,
an hour without crowds (only 300 tickets will be sold)
2. It appears that the VIP time on the tickets is incorrect. VIP begins at
Noon.
3. New this year--Cask Row. We have a few breweries bringing cask beer, so
we're going to place them in the same area. Who is bringing cask, you
wonder? How's this for a line-up: Town Hall, Great Waters, Fitger's, Barley
John's (I think), Summit, probably Surley, and you heard it hear first, I'm
bringing two Schell's on cask, one of which will be this year's Snowstorm, a
London Stout.
See you there!

It's that time of year again to start thinking about the harvest of apples (for fermentation purposes, of course). Last year, we had a couple issues that we should try address:
1. Need more pickers
2. Need more crusher and press capacity
For the first item, we just need as many people as possible to keep picking up apples. It takes a lot more apples than you think to make 1 gallon, let alone the 5,6, or 10 gals of fermenter capacity you brought. My guess is that it probably takes about 20 - 24 apples to make 1 gallon of juice. I'm sure Mark Glewwe will correct my estimate, here...
For the second item, we have a few routes we can go:
a) Have everyone pitch in $10-$20 and have the club by one
b) Have one person buy one and bring it to share
c) Rent one
I called Northern Brewer, and they have a "30 - 50 gallon" capacity basket apple press. It rents for $50/day. We'd need a crusher, too -- that's another $20.
Please send Mark and me a message letting us know your preference.
Thanks.
Andrew
For wine lovers - a favorite winery of ours will be at
Byerly's-Ridgedale and St. Louis Park next Wednesday for a book signing
and free tasting. Susan Sokol Blosser of the Sokol Blosser winery in
Oregon will be there. Joan and I met Susan at the winery last year.
They have an excellent variety of wines and we joined their wine club so
we get regular shipments.
Ridgedale
book signing 11-noon
tasting noon-1pm
St Louis Park
book singing 4:30-5:30
tasting 5:30-6:30
and it's FREE unless you want a book signed
