The Hoppy Halloween competition, besides being sponsored by our good
friends the Prairie Homebrewing Companions, is the 6th of 7 qualifying
competitions for the High Plains Homebrewer of the Year, as well as a
qualifier for the Midwest Brewer of the Year competition. If you'd like
to help them judge, the contest is a GREAT party, they have a fabulous
banquet, and this year, they are bringing John Palmer, author of "How To
Brew", in to speak.

I live in Duluth MN, but will be visiting the minneapolis area in a few weeks... my sister suggested I use Craiglist to try to sell these.
I've used the demijohns for a year, but found my back can't handle lifting them without anyone around... so I will be sticking to smaller carboys for my winemaking. I paid $55 each plus a few dollars for the rubber bungs that fit the top. Basket's to hold them came with it also.
If anyone is insterested, email me and make me an offer, Thanks! Dustin

OK, this is it, the time is here. The event we all wait for all year.......
This Saturday, September 16th is the one and only, much anticipated,
Northern Ale Stars Oktoberfest, held on the great lawn of the Hoag family
estate (5426 Bear Trap Rd, Saginaw MN 218-729-6302). There will be music,
dancing, tourniments of chance, food and of course...BEER! Bring something
to grill, a side dish to share with the group, lawn chairs to sit around the
fire in the evening and sing German drinking somgs until the sun comes up
and of course...beer (homebrew if you have it).
See you there!
Thanks for the reminder! Since it is a bit of driving for me, I like to make as much of a trip as possible, so before the tour and meeting I'm going to the NOAA open house in Chanhassen which is in the same area I think. www.crh.noaa.gov/mpx/?n=openhouse Maybe I'll see some of you there too.

SEPTEMBER MhBA MEETING

September 16, 2006 - 11:45am - 5 p.m.
By Dave and Sue Luskey
The September MhBA meeting will be a busy day! First on the
agenda will be a tour of Rahr Malting Company. Following the
tour, Dave and Sue Luskey will host the continuation of the club
meeting at their house.
Rahr Malting is one of the few malting companies left in
Minnesota. Its Shakopee facility is the largest single-site malt
producer in the world, producing 370,000 metric tons each year.
Rahr started operations in Shakopee in 1936 with malt house #1,
and then later built four more malt houses. Malt house #5 is the
most recent addition, built in 1991 with the latest and most
efficient German technology capable of producing 12,000 bushels
every 16-20 hours.
We will meet at malt house #5 between 11:30-11:45 a.m. for the
tour, which departs at 12 noon sharp and will last 90 minutes.
Bring a beer or two to give to the Rahr employees if you wish;
they greatly appreciate it. Please label the bottle with the style of
beer and the brewer's name.
After the tour, a five to ten minute drive from Rahr Malting will
take us to Dave and Sue Luskey's house, where the club meeting
will resume at 2 p.m. The meeting agenda consists of Dave
presenting the technical topic of Lagering. In addition,
September's Style Of The Month is Stout and the club will select
one member's interpretation to represent us in the upcoming AHA
National Club-Only Competition.
The Stainless Brewer contest will be judged at the meeting.
And finally-Lunch! Dave will be smoking pork roast for
Carolina pulled pork sandwiches. Please bring something to share.
Both the grill and smoker will be available for anybody to use. If
you have any questions you can contact Dave at 952-496-2770 or

Dear Judges, Volunteers and Entrants to the 2006 Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition -
The medals awarded in this years competition had "Minnesota Home Brewers Association" cast on them. I apologize on behalf of the Minnesota State Fair competition for this - the contest is co-sponsored by the MHBA and the Saint Paul Home Brewers Association. As you know, this year the contest switched from printed medallion labels to cast medals. The medals were completely designed by the Minnesota State Fair, not by the contest committee, and were cast without our having seen the design. It is has been my agenda to speak with the State Fair about this, so that the 2007 State Fair medals read only "2007 Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition." There was no intention to leave SPHBC off (or any other club), or to aggrandize the MHBA, it was just a mistake on the part of the State Fair.
We appreciate the help and cooperation of all judges, volunteers and entrants, and we value help from any Minnesota brew club who wants to help with the State Fair Homebrew Competition. We had 288 entries this year - 37 more than last year, and with everyone's help, the contest will continue to prosper and grow.
Regards,
Sean Hewitt
2006 MN State Fair Homebrew Competition Organizer
