I called Inver Grove Heights and was able to obtain the needed values. I have
updated the word document and attached it to this e-mail.
I also used Promash to calc the values for Ca & Mg from the hardness, let me
know if they seem out of line or I did something wrong. Strangely, I
calced the
Alkalinity using promash (input values were Hardness and pH) and the
values were
way off from what was given to me by the city.
Please update your city if you have reliable sources. Then mail back to the
clubs. I will post this on sphbc.org soon.
Thanks for the info guys!

And for those less interested in slaving over the apple grinder, we will be
buying cider from Minnesota Harvest again.
Price - $3.25/gal
Delivery - Nov. 5 at Barley John's (Teach a Friend to Brew Day)
Send me your orders. Last year we bought out everything they had, so they
are asking for a 2 week advance notice when we place our order. So, please
have your orders in by October 22.

Greetings,
Will the "Waters of the greater Twin Cities Area" be on tap
again at this year's ABR?
Related note. One of the things that the Downtown Council was
very good at was keeping us all supplied with drinking and rinse
water. Since they won't be there, that WotGTCA exhibit would
be a good fall back.
Cheers,
Jim

Hi,
We have a couple of fun events happening at The Pig:
1. Beer Tasting with Unibroue, Tuesday, October 4 @ 7:00 p.m.
This is the brewery in Quebec that makes Belgian-style ales like The Pig
favorites Le Fin du Monde and Maudite. We will be tasting 8 of their beers
and appetizers will be provided. The cost is just $25 per person and
seating is limited. Reserve your space this week at The Pig.
2. Tequila Tasting, Monday, October 24 @ 7:00 p.m.
You will be tasting 6 very special tequilas and we'll be passing around the
appetizers. You better plan on taking it easy on Tuesday. The cost is $40
per person and again, space is very limited.
If you have not been in for a while you will want to stop by The Pig this
weekend to take advantage of the end of our Oktoberfest celebration. We
have been serving up a different Oktoberfest beer each night for the last 2
weeks and it all winds down this weekend. Tonight we are featuring Paulaner
for $3/bottle and Thursday night it is Ayinger 500ml bottles for
$4 each. And starting Friday, any random bottles of Oktoberfest we have
sitting around are going into the grab bag and will be sold for just $3
each.
And for you Belgian beer lovers we have Kasteel Blonde in 33cl bottles
available this weekend. The Mad Bitch is back, this time in small 33cl
bottles for $7.50. And on draught we have De Dolle's winter seasonal Stille
Nacht, a yeasty, fruity, spicy and alcoholic beverage that real beer
drinkers are sure to love.
Mark

Hello beer lovers!
Time for your second note from Surly Brewing Company (we'll stop counting
sometime soon, but indulge us for now).
First of all, we got our first piece of press! The Minnesota Homebrewers
Association's publication, The Boiler, came out and visited us at the
brewery.
Here's the result: http://www.mnbrewers.com/newsletters/2005_09.pdf. Scroll
down to page 8 for the goods. Hopefully all of our future interviews will be
as fun - drinking beer may facilitate that.
In recent weeks, we've received many friendly emails, phone calls and even
visits from well-wishers. Thanks! It does a body good - nearly as much as
beer
- to get such great feedback. Folks are also wondering when we'll be brewing
our first batch of Surly. Damn good question. Unexpectedly, we have had to
purchase a brand new boiler and chiller which are "in the mail." So, tell
you
what: Why don't you tell us when we will first brew, and then we'll both
know!
Seriously - let's have a "Guess the brew date contest." Send us the date you
think we'll first start brewing. It could be any day between tomorrow (not
so
likely) and Dec. 31st (2005, for the smart-alecks out there). The winner
gets his/her choice of $100 worth of Surly merchandise, anything from hats
to frisbees to glasses to shirts and jackets.
So let's hear it! Shoot us an email at beer(a)surlybrewing.com, pick your date
and prepare to be the first on your block to rock some Surly swag. Vote
today, drink tomorrow!
In related news, the delay in receiving a couple of final pieces of
equipment means we won't be attending this year's Minneapolis Autumn Beer
Review.
Instead, look for us at the Winterfest beer festival in St. Paul.
That's it for now. We'll leave you with this from founding father Ben
Franklin:
"Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Amen,
brother Ben.
More soon!
Omar

Oktoberfest Release: Thursday September 29th. $3.00 Pints from 8-10pm
Oktoberfest Release this Thursday: That time of the year is upon us, colder
weather, falling autumn leaves, hops ready to harvest on the vine, and yes,
the beer that gets its own fest designation: oktoberfest. We brewed this
malty beverage in the German brewing tradition (double decoction mashing)
and have been lagering this annual brew for the last 4 months and now it is
time to release it to your glass. Tawny amber in color, malty to taste and
subtle on hops with a clean lager finish. Come out this Thursday and help
celebrate with us as we serve up a modest German menu coupled with $3.00
pints of this year's Oktoberfest from 8-10pm. Prost!

At tomorrow's BJCP class the MhBA will select our club champion for the
AHA Club-Only competition for European Amber Lagers. This style includes
Vienna Lagers and Oktoberfest, so if you have a homebrewed version of one
of these, please bring it to Mike Behrendt's house tomorrow night. If you
have the time, stay and help us select the entry that will be sent off to
represent the MhBA against all the other clubs' champions for this
competition.
If you can't make it to Mike's tomorrow night, drop it off before 7pm
tomorrow, or get it to me, Gera Exire LaTour, Jonathan Crist, or one of
the other BJCP class members to bring. You need 1-2 bottles of your brew
for tomorrow, and 2 more bottles if your beer is selected to go on.
Here is Mike's address, and directions to his place:
Mike Behrendt

My copy is a normal copy, not a review copy. It was shipped from the BA
and arrived earlier this week.
I preordered a long time ago. Probably like in January at the Spirit
of Belgium conference where Stan talked about some of this stuff (the
book was only a very early draft back then since he mentions stuff from
the conference in the book).
