Last evening the Imperial Stout was brewed. The mashtun was overflowing (honest) and my gravity in 12 gallons was 1.100 without additional malt.
I wished I could have done it on a Saturday and used the second runnings to make a mild or small beer but you know how it goes when you are trying to brew at night and work during the day.
All the equipment was used including twin stir plates. Both carboys received about 3 liters of slurry.
As of this morning, everything was bubbling and the foam hadn't yet foamed over but it had only been fermenting for 8 hours.

I ran across an interesting article on biere de garde in the New York
Times. Here's the link:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/13/dining/13WINE.html
You may need an account with the NYT web site to get access. The account
is free. If there is any interest and you don't want to sign up for an
account, I'd be glad to copy the article to e-mail and send it to the
list or to individuals. Let me know.

The St. Paul system on a real trailer would/could serve as a teaching
tool. I don't think we need to recreate that in a slightly smaller
version. Besides, a handful of people (mostly 2 or 3) spent well over
100 man hours creating the brew system. Along with an unknown amount of
donated supplies and fixtures.
I realize we will have plenty of help with this project, but I don't
think we will get the level of support (labor and funds) needed build
another mobile brew system. Nor do I think we need another one.
I think we can better determine what would serve the clubs best after we
talk with the Science Museum folks tonight and attend the workshop
tomorrow.
Thanks for all the great ideas, we'll keep you all updated and provide
tasks for those who would like to help with the project.

The big brew system requires a pick up truck and can't just be towed.
A truly mobile system would be cool.
The big brew system could use a few improvements, in my opinion.

Other than the volume, it sounds exactly like the 50-gallong mobile
brewery
trailer that the St.Paul club already has.

I love the idea of a functional mobile brewery/exhibit. I don't know if
we
could accomplish it within the 1200-1600 budget, but perhaps with the
right
combination of donated/scavenged stuff...

Hey Gang,
I just found out I have to go to Milwaukee on business this Thursday. I will be there overnight. Any recommendations for a "Must See" brewpub in Milwaukee? I have a list of options that I found online, but I don't know anything about them.

Fellow Brewers and Beer Lovers--
As it now stands, both the Minnesota Homebrewers Association and the Saint Paul Homebrewers Club will be participating in an exciting and rewarding grant opportunity sponsored by the National Science Foundation and administered by the Minnesota Science Museum. Tomorrow afternoon, the representatives from the two clubs (who have most graciously and generously volunteered a great deal of their time to this project!) will meet with Chris Burda, the woman at the Museum who is in charge of the program. Their task tomorrow and during an afternoon workshop on Wednesday is to brainstorm project ideas for the grant money.
At the moment, the two clubs are participating separately, but are pooling their monies into one project. The grant provides for each club to get $600 toward a club project, preferably one with a science bent to it. If you have ideas, please e-mail them to me, or to one of the wonderful folks who are shouldering the burden of the work. Basically, anything goes, as long as it can be done for $1200 (or $1600, should the two clubs each pony up $200, which is the earnest amount that is asked for if the clubs do not wish to each donate five hours of service time (not a big deal--next year's Teach a Friend Day could probably count--the Museum is very flexible on how the hours are used)).
One idea that has surfaced is for a beautiful brewing process display that could be erected whenever we were demonstrating homebrewing, such as at the Renaissance. With $1200 and the Museum's amazing exhibits crew, that could turn out extremely well!
So, please put on your thinking caps, drum up some ideas for cool club projects, then e-mail those ideas to me, or to:

Doug Hoverson at dhoverson(a)cadets.com
Kris England at engla008(a)umn.edu
Curt Stock at CHS(a)barr.com
Jesse Stremcha at stremcha(a)csp.edu
These folks have stepped up and will attend the workshops, but there will be plenty of opportunities for us all to pitch in and help make the most of this $1200 project. Thanks for sending them your ideas.
Thanks,
John

Last week our friend Pete Hoilman (AKA Wheels) passed away. Please join us to celebrate his life this Thursday at the Town Hall Brewery in Minneapolis. Come and share your stories and hang out at the place Pete loved to frequent. The event begins at 6pm this Thursday, October 14th. This will be a happy hour event featuring some of Pete's snacks. Snacks and House Beer will be provided, just bring your memories to share and enjoy. Pete was a friend to us all, let's get together and honor him this Thursday.
Donations will be taken for the Courage Center in Pete's memory.
Dave-
It's not a brewpub, but "The Safe House" in Milwaukee is a must-see!
