Anyone else read in the latest issue of Zymurgy on how this years AHA competition will be lottery style? Interesting idea, should solve a lot of the registration issues, but then again some big home brewers may not even get a chance to enter?
Thoughts?

I will be ordering some agave nectar shortly and have 1 gallon with no taker
so far.
Anyone want it? It will be about $36 and makes between 4 and 5 gallons of a
really delicious drink.
Thanks!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New hours coming soon for the Summit Beer Hall
Summit Beer Hall will be open on Saturdays in 2014
ST. PAUL, Minn. – (December 19, 2013) – <http://gdbagency.dmanalytics2.com/click?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.summitbrewing.co…> Summit Brewing Company today announces that the Summit Beer Hall & Taproom will be open both Friday and Saturday from 4-9 p.m. starting January 3, 2014.
The Beer Hall has been open for more than a year. In the summer months, the patio is packed; in the winter months, it’s a full house of beer lovers enjoying their favorite Summit year-round and seasonal brews on draught. Craft beer connoisseurs also visit for the specialty one-off beers and firkins that are available exclusively at the Beer Hall.
Because of this positive response, Summit has decided to change the existing hours and add a new day to the Beer Hall schedule. Starting January 3, 2014, the Beer Hall will be open both Friday and Saturday from 4-9 p.m.
These Beer Hall hours will be filled with draught and cask ale, food trucks and special events—just as they have been for the past year. Pints will still be $4 and there will also be a new 7 oz. sampler size available for $2 per glass.
You can see what specialty beers, food trucks and events are scheduled at the <http://gdbagency.dmanalytics2.com/click?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.summitbrewing.co…> Beer Hall & Taproom Page of the Summit website.

The competition will be limited to 800 entries. All entries to be judged by at least 2 BJCP Judges, Professional Brewers, or Mead Judges.
Participant, judging, and steward registration for the competition will be coordinated through the web site at http://www.midwinterhbc.com . Entries will be accepted January 4th through February 8th at 11 different locations in WI, IL, & MN. Shipped entries should be sent to Northern Brewer in West Allis, WI. Please refer to the web site for drop off location cut off dates and addresses.

Also one Mead entry (BJCP categories 25 A-C, 26A, & 26C) will be ramped up by Moonlight Meadery as a pilot batch.
The awards ceremony will again take place at Revere’s Wells Street Tavern on February 22nd at 6:30 PM central time. Gordon Strong is scheduled to present Brewing Better Beer: Practical Applications prior to the awards announcement. Both the presentation and the awards ceremony are open to the public. Results will be posted to the competition website shortly after the conclusion of the awards ceremony.
Additional details can be found on the competition web site, Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ pages. Subject: [mnbrewers] Craft Beer for the Homebrewer
A very long while ago I polled the group about recipes members most wanted from commercial breweries. It was for a book I was working on called Craft Beer for the Homebrewer. The book is finally coming out. It shipped from the publisher's warehouse yesterday and should be out there soon.
The book includes nearly 40 homebrew-scaled recipes for commercial beers provided by the brewers who make them. There are recipes from local favorites like Schell's, Surly, and Dave's Brewfarm. Other contributors include The Bruery, Cigar City, Shmaltz, Epic, Lagunitas, and others. There are lots of pro-brewers tips and profiles of every brewery. Recipes are written as both extract and all-grain. The book is full of color images and looks pretty awesome.

All,
I have decided to get into kegging and I'm looking for 2 kegs local if anyone knows where I might be able to acquire any or would lime to part with 2 that you have sitting in your basement. I'm watching craigslist, but as you know they don't show up there very often. I would prefer to stay in the $35-40 per keg range. I really don't want to spend $100 or more for new ones :(
Thanks,
Garret
Hey all,
Here are details on the Mash Out!

It's almost about Mashout time again!
Yup, it's our lucky thirteenth competition and we're getting ready for another awesome Mashout!
The most different part of the UMMO this year is our focus on Giving Back. Our very dear friend Kathy Stock was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this fall. Every penny of the proceeds of the UMMO will go to her, for anything she needs or bills ... personally we hope she buggers off to Vegas and makes a mint!
For you volunteers, and if you aren't one you really gotta get on board, the judging will be at Grumpys-Roseville again as its a great place with killer beer and food. We'll be doing a lot of the really cool stuff we always do...plus a few new angles. You'll be wined and dined like no other competition in the nation plus your standard commemorative beer and glass.
We'll have lunchtime speakers, again, for your enjoyment. For Friday and Saturday lunch, Michael Dawson, brand manager at Wyeast will be giving two different talks on the Friday and Saturday.
The massively popular Friday night Piss-up will be back and better than ever. Bring your wackest, dopest, dirty or funky commercial beers possible. Sour, risqu and so on. There will be some stuff a lot of you guys have never tried before! As always, the ever awesome Cellar beer event will be the hallmark of the evening.
Finally, the banquet is always a great time. Last year we were full and seats, again, are sure to sell out quickly so get your tickets ASAP. You again get a commemorative glass, meal, beers and the debauchery that follows.
So, what are the important dates?
- Registration opens on 13 December.
- Dropoff begins on 27 December.
- Registration and dropoff end on 17 January.
- The Mashout happens on 24 and 25 January.
- The banquet happens the evening of the 25 January.
So, just like the election, enter early and enter often! We cap out entries at 1,000 and we've hit that in previous years.
See you there!

Hey all,
I want to start out 2014 with an early field trip to visit the Prohibition exhibit at the MN History Center on Jan 4 from 1-4 PM. That day Great Waters will be pouring beers at the exhibit. We can discuss details of either having lunch before the event or dinner afterwards...there should be something beer related we can figure out! Just wanted to get this out there ASAP so folks can get it on their schedules.

Subject: [mnbrewers] note to donators
I'm still getting calls and e-mails about people wanting to donate to
tonight's auction for Kathy Stock. I'm telling those folks that there will
be a similar auction at the Mash Out contest at the end of January, so
please come back with items at that time.
Also, for all of you who generously donated items for tonight's event,
please feel free to pull any items where bids don't even approximate the
item's value. In that case, it would be more benefit to Kathy to have that
item saved for the Mash Out auction. Some items already have "minimum bid"
thresholds, but many others do not. I certainly don't expect that all items
will go for their face value, but we shouldn't have someone walking off with
a $40 bottle of rare beer for $3.
We are cooperating with Kathy's work group on this, and they chose a
Wednesday evening. It's hard to say how many people in the beer community
will be able to show - but I hope a lot.
Thanks,
Paul
