Folks, this seems to be important. It appears that it is not legal for us
to bring homebrew outside our household. I'm not sure if it's specifically
illegal to do so, but this effort is aimed at making sure that it is
specifically allowed.
Other states have had similar issues. In Oregon, they had to cancel the
state fair competition a few years ago, because it was illegal to transport
homebrew. They've since changed their laws.
Please take a few minutes and contact your representatives. It doesn't have
to be a long email, quantity of comments is more important.
Thanks!

Subject: Call to Action - MN homebrewing legislation
Dear Eric, Mike, Steven, Anna and Keith
I am writing to you in regards to important legislation that was recently
introduced in the Minnesota Legislature regarding home brewing. As you may
know, existing Minnesota law does not explicitly allow for homebrew to be
served for anything other than "family use."
My club, the Boreal Brewers of Grand Rapids, Minn. has worked with Minnesota
State Representative Tom Anzelc and State Senator Tom Saxhaug to introduce
identical bills in the House (HF2999) and Senate (SF2604) that, if passed,
would explicitly allow for homemade beer and wine to be used for organized
affairs, exhibitions, tastings and competition.
We need homebrewers from all corners of the state to contact their
legislators to ask them to support the bills. It is important that your
elected representatives see there is a need for the law to be changed. Who
Represents Me? <http://www.leg.state.mn.us/leg/districtfinder.aspx> is the
Minnesota Legislature web site for identifying those legislators who
represent you. I recall a MN senator a few years back stating that if they
get ten letters on a topic they sit up and take notice; if they get fifty,
they're amazed.
We also need you to contact Representative Joe Atkins, Chair: Commerce and
Consumer Protection Finance and Policy, and ask him to support the bill as
well. His email address is rep.joe.atkins(a)house.mn. HF 2999 has been
referred to his committee, and we need to be proactive to make sure it gets
passed on to the floor.
You can help by contacting your brew club members and urging them to contact
their representatives. When contacting your legislators, it is not
important to write a novel, instead, just a quick note asking them to
support the home brewing bills that were introduced this spring.
We have more information about the proposed changes at our website:
www.borealbrewers.com. We also have some talking point for including in
correspondence with them.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Thanks for helping us get the word out and supporting this important
legislation.
Relax and Have a Homebrew.

OK next JAb meeting is this Friday at my place (1966 Fountain Lane in Waconia.) Usual time of 6:30 or so to start. I will be giving a short talk on beer cellaring with a small Bigfoot Barleywine vertical to go along with it. If anyone has a bottle or two of this year's vintage, that would be VERY useful! The mash paddle will be up for English and American barleywines so bring one if you have it! See you folks then!

I got this from Andrew Schmitt of Minnesota Beer Activists.
Authors: Sen Tom Saxhaug and Rep Tom Anzelc.
See attachment for possible language to be drafted.
The language here closely mirrors what is in the federal law. It doesn't
specifically address serving to the public which seems to be the issue that
Steve Benson's club was pushing, so I'm not sure what to make of it.

From Andrew Schmitt of MN Beer Activists.
MN Beer Activists <http://mnbeeractivists.com/> are putting out a call to
action for beer lovers across the state of Minnesota to help finally legalize
the sale of liquor, wine, and beer <http://sundaysalesmn.org/> on Sundays.
38 states allow Sunday liquor sales <http://sundaysalesmn.org/>, including
every state that surrounds Minnesota. It is time to give Minnesota
consumers and retailers the choice. Let's stop sending our hard earned
money over the borders. Politicians can stop pretending they are worried
about the impact on "Mom & Pop liquor stores." The fact is there plenty of
small independent stores in states where Sunday liquor sales are legal.
Just follow one of the hundreds of MN license plates over to Superior, or
Hudson, and take a look. Mom & Pop are going to be just fine.
"Commerce is well enough established as seven days and nights a week now, "
Dayton said. "For us to say it doesn't apply to this or doesn't apply to
that really doesn't make much sense. There are an increasing number of
Minnesotans for which Sunday isn't a religious
holiday."<http://www.startribune.com/politics/statelocal/237733421.html>
Opponents <http://www.startribune.com/politics/116537693.html> and
prohibitionists <http://www.municipalbev.com/magazines/mag_2012_0708.pdf> will
stand by old arguments, claiming that Sundays won't add any more sales, or
that stores will be forced to open. In reality, Sunday is the second
busiest shopping day of the week, and any store that doesn't want to open
won't have to. Plenty of banks and barbers make these choices every week
without a government mandate. When Colorado passed Sunday beer
sales<http://www.nightclub.com/legislative/news/discus-growth-colorado-alcohol-ta…>
the
increased revenue was credited with bringing liquor stores through tough
economic conditions. How's that for 6 days of sales across 7 days?
On @DailyCircuit <https://twitter.com/DailyCircuit>, Daudt says 'this could
be the yr' for Sunday liquor sales. Thissen & Daudt both say burden is on
those wanting to keep ban

For probably the first time ever Sunday liquor
sales<http://sundaysalesmn.org/> has
a real chance of passing this year. Governor Dayton has said he will sign a
Sunday sales bill, and House leaders Thissen & Daudt have said 2014 could
be the year. <https://twitter.com/webertom1/status/436525166621769728> However,
with all the bipartisan support the Sunday sales bill still faces
opposition from leadership. The Sunday liquor bill will need to be heard
and passed in the House and Senate Commerce Committees. Committee Chairs
Representative Joe Atkins (D) and Senator Jim Metzen (D) are may not give
the bill fair committee hearings without receiving a large amount of public
pressure. This is how you can help.
