We have an opportunity to acquire a decent quantity of honey at a reasonable price and thought it might help some of you make a batch or two (or three) of mead. Dave Schroeder is former president of the MHBA (Minnesota Hobby Beekeepers Association) and has honey available in 5 gallon buckets (60 pounds). He will sell honey to us for $120 per five gallons or approximately $24 per gallon. Ive used his honey before and know it is high quality. Dave is selling his honey rapidly and will likely be out of stock by early February. Im not trying to rush or use force but I really enjoy making mead. You should too. To keep this a low effort project here is how to proceed. 1. Decide you want a bucket or two 2. Send me a check by January 15 to the address below. 3. Make the check for $120 out to Dave Schroeder. 4. Include phone or e-mail address for pickup confirmation. 5. If you want 1/3 bucket or ½ bucket, buy a bucket and find someone willing to share. Any other questions, call or e-mail The Fine print: I will exchange your check for the honey and will keep it inside until you arrange for pick up. I am not able to front you for your bucket-o-honey. October Meeting Place

Hey JABbers! Sj and I are out of town for the October meeting and we still don't have a back-up location for the meeting scheduled. Can anyone host the meeting that month on Oct 11th? I know the usual suspects (Mike Lebben, Tim Roets) are also unable to do it and I'm hoping we don't miss our first meeting in nearly 6 years! --Eric

Darkness Day advice/experiences/recommendations

Hey JAB'ers! Posting this to the Facebook group as well but am looking to get get some advice on what to expect with Surly's upcoming Darkness Day event coming up in October. Basically I am looking for any advice, recommendations and info for a 1st timer to one of these events. I did scour the inter webs and got a rough idea on what happens but thought I'd ask the guys I often clink' glasses with on a monthly basis. Here are a few questions I have at the top of my head: 1. When is a 'good' time to show up? I was thinking Friday but not sure if it makes a difference to go mid-afternoon or just go there in the evening. 2. Do you actually line up to get your wristbands? Not sure how that works. 3. Can you bring a tent or two? Portable heater or one of those portable fire pits/Chimera? 4. What the heck do you do all night? Drink, try to stay warm? I assume there are pickup games of corn toss and all that stuff but was wondering if Surly has bands, etc the Friday before the event. Thats it for now. I'd love to hear what you guys have to say about it. I have a handful of avid craft beer drinkers that had no idea about this event. I want to properly forewarn them what they are getting themselves into. THANKS! Ben Ducklow Carver, MN

September update!

Hey Jabbers, Meeting this month is this Friday the 13th! My place at 1966 Fountain Lane, Waconia, starting around 6:30 PM. We will be doing the tasting for our JAB yeast experiment, and the mash paddle will go to someone who brought one of those--but feel free to bring other beers to share if you like. Out JAB family cook-out is to be this Sunday the 15th, starting at 12:00 (Emerson Picnic Area, Technology Drive, East of Costco in Eden Prairie.) Thanks for helping us get this great space Kent! Bring something to grill for your family and perhaps a side dish to share. We will have the club jockey box set up and there is plenty of fridge space so bring a keg, growler, or bottles of homebrew to share. This is a really nice enclosed area with surrounding grass for kids to run around on. Last year we had a pretty low turn-out, but I'm hoping plenty of folks come to hang out.
