Greetings,
Have appended Russ's tasting notes from JP's. Thanks for sharing those.
This week, we're staying close to Surdyks, going to
Bobino. Grape dujour is Syrah/Shiraz. Officially, these
are grapes, grown anywhere, that originated in the "Riviera
Triangle" of S. France and N. Italy or some such.
Warren has a better geographical description, but I have
neither seen nor heard it.

Syrah & Shiraz at JP's . 7/1/2004
White . fresh grape aroma, minimal wood, tasty midweight, very persistent and long. 2002
Chablis Premier Cru, Cote de Lechet, Olivier Leflaive. Fine accompaniment to JP's
excellent calamari.
1.1 . very dark color, reticent nose; cool black raspberry flavors, midweight, excellent
balance, some tannin, focused finish, yummy. 1999 Equus Recalcitrant Red, Paso Robles.
1.2 . medium purple, light fruit-driven Beaujolais-type nose, round sweet ozzie tasting
wine, alcoholic, decent balance though, smooth transition to an only moderately aromatic
finish, tasty wine, increasingly yeasty smells on nose as the wine opened. 2001 Robert
Hall Syrah, Paso Robles.
1.3 . lightest color of flight, maturing at edges; intriguingly funky mature red wine nose
with a sappy very Burgundian quality, granted that it doesn't smell like pinot noir;
tastes as it smells and more so, alcohol and acid showing but in reasonable balance with
fruit, finishes on the quiet side, well focused, good food wine; with air, more and more
aromatic and developing a nice sweet/sour quality, increasing impression of maturity.
1996 Syrah La Rosine, Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes, M. Ogier. Several of us,
including me, guessed this wine to be from the mid-1980s. The vineyard is reportedly just
across the road from Cote-Rotie.
1.4 . dark purple, glycerin legs; cool, deep black fruit nose; sediment in glass but falls
reasonably bright; big round sweet ozzie wine, good balance, still tannic, firm finish as
it tastes, good quality. 2000 Laughing Magpie, McLaren Vale, d'Arenberg.
Interestingly, this wine seemed to me quite a bit more attractive from a pinot noir glass
than from a shiraz glass.
2.1 . medium dark, peppery syrah and red fruit nose, weighty and mouth coating, still some
acid to lose, finish very long although not all that powerful, very good quality,
impression this could still use some time. 1996 Case Via Syrah, IGT Collidella Toscana
Centrale, Fontodi.
2.2 . lighter and older-looking color, reticent nose, notably lacks fruit in this company.
1990 Vincent Arroyo Petite Sirah, Napa. This got more than one vote for wine of the
night, although it obviously did not push my personal buttons.
2.3 . very dark; big aromatic black fruit rather ozzie nose; in the mouth a huge, cool,
ozzie-tasting wine of massive black and red fruits, extremely primary, explosively
powerful finish, outstanding balance, very young, I like this a lot. 2001 Shiraz, McLaren
Vale, Pirramimma.
2.4 . inky; big complicated fruit salad nose with a touch of menthol; midpalate of smooth
dark fruits, touch of alcohol and acid showing but excellent balance overall, great big
wine, finish slightly lacks fruit compared to nose and midpalate but this is excellent,
suspect the wine is hiding its alcohol well. 2002 Clancy's Barossa, Peter Lehman.
According to the label, 54% shiraz, 29% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 5% cabernet franc,
and 14% alcohol.
Dessert . a brown wine, very leggy; serious figgy-floral nose suggests an older wine,
midpalate sweet and rich, honeyed, smoke, awesome acid structure, fair amount of alcohol
showing through the aromatic fruit; smooth transition to very aromatic finish as it
tastes, delicious and ultra long. NV Campbell's Tokay, Rutherglen.
