Subject: Teach a Friend to Brew Comes a Week Early
Saturday, November 6th is National Teach a Friend to Home Brew Day.
However,
because of scheduling difficulties, the Northern Ale Stars will be
observing
this event this Saturday, October 30th at the home of Walt Pittack. We will
be doing an extract and an all-grain Porter so people can see both styles,
and we can see how the two styles turn out. The recipe's will be pretty
much
the same.
The brewing will start around 10:00 AM, so bring along some beer and, if
you
can stick around, something to grill afterwards along with a snack to
share
with the group. If you have mobile brewing equipment and would like to brew
with us, you're more than welcome to do so (we're brewing outside, so
you'll
need your own burner).
Directions: From Duluth take 53 North to 194 (which is a left hand turn at
the Hearth & Home store). Go through the stoplights at Midway road (when
they are green) and make the first left hand turn onto Solway road. Go
through the stop sign at Solway & Rose road (after stopping) and make a
right hand turn onto the first road which is Woodgate. Make a left hand
turn
onto the second road which is Birchway. Walt's house is the first house on
the right. 5979 Birchway Road Phone: 729-5098.
Beer News From The UP of Michigan
NAS Roving Reporter Tim Winkler was in Houghton Michigan and returned with
this report of the local beer scene:
Spent the weekend in Houghton, Michigan area for the annual trip to the
Lake
Superior ProRally. Arrived Thursday, checked in to the Super 8, then went
off to sample the offerings of the new Keweenaw Brewing Company on Shelden
Ave. Hilde's Brown Ale and the Coal Porter were particularly good. Prices
are rather cheap, at only $2 a pint. There is only limited seating in the
bar area, but the place was packed the two times we were there. The brew
kettles are easily seen behind the bar, and not enclosed as in many such
operations. They also sell kegs to other bars in the area; they close
early
(10pm) in an effort to be less competition to the bars that sell their
product.
The Library has been a standard of dining in Houghton for many years.
Rebuilt after a fire a few years ago, it now houses a brewpub, with our pal
Bob Jackson as brewmaster. Spent an evening sampling Bob's brews and he
still does a damn fine job. The Rabbit Bay Brown Ale and Shafthouse Stout
are exceptional. The seasonal brew this time of year is still the
Oktoberfest, and it is one of the best I have ever had.
As the home of MTU and Finlandia University, the local grocery stores cater
to the taste of the students, with a good selection of micros and imports.
And as long as you are picking up pastys to take home, make sure you get a
bottle of "Toivo and Eino's Secret Recipe Pasty Sauce". It is best
described as jalapeno ketchup.
Finally, we're attempting to put together a group of individuals interested
in becoming BJCP certified beer judges. The certification classes normally
take place in the Twin Cities on weeknights, but the individuals who teach
those classes have graciously offered to assist us in getting something
going here. I've heard from some people, but I'd like to hear from others
regarding interest and what days you'd be available. We were looking at
Saturdays, but that didn't fly, so we're working on creating a study group
schedule which would work for everyone.
So, if you're interested in becoming a beer judge, send me an e-mail and
I'll work on getting a group put together.
Cheers,
Steve Daiken
