Hey Al!
Happy October! As our team returns from Denver after another successful Great American
Beer Festival, we have a lot of great news to share. We're excited that our Double
Bock was awarded a gold medal in the German-Style Doppelbock or Eisbock category! We also
announced the winners of the 2013 LongShot Homebrewing Competition (more on that below).
Here in New England, as the days get shorter the fall seems to be coming to a close and we
know the cold is just around the corner. It's time to enjoy those last few steins of
OctoberFest and look forward to Winter Lager. It'll be here before you know it!
We hope you enjoy this month's edition of What's on Tap.

LongShot Announcement
Our 2013 LongShot Homebrew Competition received close to 1,000 entries this year! Each
beer was carefully evaluated by a panel of beer industry judges based on the aroma,
appearance, flavor and mouthfeel according to the style category under which it was
submitted.
Jim Koch, our founder and brewer, began hosting the annual LongShot homebrew contest in
1995 to recognize the most talented homebrewers in the country. Without further ado, the
winners are...
Russ Brunner's American Stout (Tamarac, Florida)
Cesar Marron's Grätzer (Evanston, Illinois)
Teresa Bury's Pineapple IPA (Samuel Adams employee)
These talented homebrewers will receive the ultimate honor - their homebrew recipes will
be brewed and made available in select retail stores nationwide this spring in the Samuel
Adams LongShot variety six-pack.

German brewers may have been onto something centuries ago when they created bold, rich
bock beers for the winter. For our beer, we brewed a dark wheat bock subtly spiced with
freshly ground cinnamon, ginger, and orange peel for a deep, smooth flavor and malty
finish that will warm you on a cold winter's night.
Unlike many winter warmers, our brew is a spiced bock using a lager yeast that creates a
smoothness and crispness to balance the deep malts. We brew this beer with a fresh ground
blend of Indonesian & Vietnamese cinnamons, offering just the right warming spice to
complement the beer without overpowering it. The addition of wheat & roasted malts
creates a smooth, hearty, and roasty character.

NEW RELEASE: TETRAVIS
The newest addition to our Barrel Room Collection, Samuel Adams Tetravis is our take on a
Belgian Quad.
A style originated by Belgian Trappist brewers, a Quadrupel (Quad for short) is a strong
Belgian style ale featuring more intense flavors than its Dubbel and Tripel sisters. Quads
are known for their rich, malty character and deep garnet and dark brown hues.
Tetravis is a rich and complex brew with a deep molasses sweetness and notes of dark
fruits, like raisins and figs. An undercurrent of tart spice and fruitiness is developed
from the distinctive Belgian yeast and character of our Kosmic Mother Funk (KMF). The
combination of malts and brewing sugar creates a deep garnet color and velvety mouthfeel
with a big malty character. The rich malts are balanced by the distinct flavors of the
Belgian yeast, KMF and Hallertau Mittelfrueh Noble hops.
