brew about 15-20
gallon batches? No fermentation - just grain crush, mash, hot liquor,
boil,
and cool. Just add water, grain, and propane.
Design it to fold into a
three tier gravity system with adequate protection from elements and wind.

As it now stands, both the Minnesota Homebrewers Association and the Saint
Paul Homebrewers Club will be participating in an exciting and rewarding
grant opportunity sponsored by the National Science Foundation and
administered by the Minnesota Science Museum. Tomorrow afternoon, the
representatives from the two clubs (who have most graciously and
generously
volunteered a great deal of their time to this
project!) will meet with
Chris Burda, the woman at the Museum who is in charge of the program.
Their
task tomorrow and during an afternoon workshop on
Wednesday is to
brainstorm
project ideas for the grant money.
At the moment, the two clubs are participating separately, but are pooling
their monies into one project. The grant provides for each club to get
$600
toward a club project, preferably one with a science
bent to it. If you
have ideas, please e-mail them to me, or to one of the wonderful folks who
are shouldering the burden of the work. Basically, anything goes, as long
as it can be done for $1200 (or $1600, should the two clubs each pony up
$200, which is the earnest amount that is asked for if the clubs do not
wish
to each donate five hours of service time (not a big
deal--next year's
Teach
a Friend Day could probably count--the Museum is very
flexible on how the
hours are used)).
One idea that has surfaced is for a beautiful brewing process display that
could be erected whenever we were demonstrating homebrewing, such as at
the
Renaissance. With $1200 and the Museum's amazing
exhibits crew, that
could
turn out extremely well!

New subject: [SPHBC] Science Museum Grant
Sorry for sticking my neck out again but that's what computers are so good
for. The St.Paul system is a very large system that makes a very large
batch of beer. Good bad or indifferent, it is very large and intimidating
to many beginning brewers and it is owned by the St. Paul club. The reason
I suggested a smaller and foldable system built into or around a trailer was
honestly because it is smaller and foldable and it doesn't require 10
fermenters per batch. I was envisioning a converted keg system powered
primarily by gravity and propane that would be capable of operating at a
beer festival for an entire day and producing maybe 3 or 4 batches in an 8
hour period and would always have something "happening."
Most folks that watch a demonstration are captivated for 10 minutes, stick
around for 20 or 30, and disappear after a few samples or when the talking
stops.
Anyhow, it was an idea that I thought worth sharing. It would take a bunch
of engineering to do it correctly and some ingenuity to collapse it down for
storage.

New subject: [SPHBC] Science Museum Grant
I'm certain that one of the workshop attendees could address this better
than I, but at the moment, the Science Museum project is focussed around a
colorful, interactive, weather-resistant display that would incorporate
three aspects of the brewing process: characteristics of beer ingredients,
steps in the brewing process, and tasting and appreciation of beer.
There certainly might be room in the display and/or budget for a demo setup,
but I would imagine it to be a basic 5-gal. extract unit. That way, it's
easier to transport and to store, as well as being less intimidating to
interested passers-by.
All the discussion is wonderful and helps the workshop folks get a better
idea of what might work, so please keep the ideas coming!

Two thoughts -
We should copy Monster Garage with a Minnesota twist - a brewery on a
snowmobile. Or just a keg on a sled.
At any demo, just having a pot of boiling wort doesn't impress many people.
They're not going to hang around to watch someone add hops later or pour it
into a carboy. If we also had a fermenter bubbling away, that may interest
some more folks.

about designing and producing a mobile brewery in a small trailer? Make it
available to brewers and demonstrators and able to brew about 15-20 gallon
batches? No fermentation - just grain crush, mash, hot liquor, boil, and
cool. Just add water, grain, and propane. Design it to fold into a three
tiergravity system with adequate protection from elements and wind. Rick

Beer Lovers-- As it now stands, both the Minnesota Homebrewers Association
and the Saint Paul Homebrewers Club will be participating in an exciting and
rewarding grant opportunity sponsored by the National Science Foundation and
administered by the Minnesota Science Museum. Tomorrow afternoon, the
representatives from the two clubs (who have most graciously and generously
volunteered a great deal of their time to this project!) will meet with
ChrisBurda, the woman at the Museum who is in charge of the program. Their
task tomorrow and during an afternoon workshop on Wednesday is to brainstorm
project ideas for the grant money. At the moment, the two clubs are
participating separately, but are pooling their monies into one project. The
grant provides for each club to get $600 toward a club project, preferably
one with a science bent to it. If you have ideas, please e-mail them to me,
or to one of the wonderful folks who are shouldering the burden of the work.
Basically, anything goes, as long as it can be done for $1200 (or $1600,
should the two clubs each pony up $200, which is the earnest amount that is
asked for if the clubs do not wish to each donate five hours of service time
(not a big deal--next year's Teach a Friend Day could probably count--the
Museum is very flexible on how the hours are used)). One idea that has
surfaced is for a beautiful brewing process display that could be erected
whenever we were demonstrating homebrewing, such as at the Renaissance. With
$1200 and the Museum's amazing exhibits crew, that could turn out extremely
well! So, please put on your thinking caps, drum up some ideas for cool club
