Subject: AHA Conference Update
Greetings homebrewers!
This is just a note to remind you about the upcoming American Homebrewers
Association National Homebrewers Conference. Thanks to homebrewers like
you, this is the largest turnout ever in the history of the event, with
nearly 400 full-time attendees, and still climbing. It's not too late to
sign up.
If you haven't checked out the schedule of speakers lately, you'll be
amazed at the quality and scope of the presentations. For complete
information on the conference, as well as online registration, go to:
http://www.chibeer.org/aha03/
For those of you who plan on coming, we'll be ready for you.
1. Bring your club spirit and your funny hats.
Many clubs are coming in full regalia for the festivities at Club Night,
and the club that puts on the best show will win a coveted trophy (see #6,
below).
2. The Wednesday night Pub Crawl is sold out.
Sorry, but we've had an overwhelming response to this, and we are limited
by occupancy limits on the bars we're visiting. FYI, may of these places
are accessible by "L" train, so you may have a chance later in the week to
sneak away and visit them on your own.
3. Bring us those stinkers!
Ed Bronson is conducting a session on Thursday entitled "Doctor Ed's House
of Bad Beer Horrors." The idea will be to have signs denoting specific off-
flavors like "diacetyl," "DMS," and "wax lips." Beers that
have the
designated flaw will be placed at each station, and attendees can try them
at their leisure. Anybody who has unidentified bad bad beers can bring
them, too, and they'll be categorized by an expert at the event when they
are opened.
Unless you want the ridicule, the beers will all be anonymous. Just mark
the bottle with the name of the flaw, or mark it "Unknown," and bring it
with you to the conference.
As far as quantity, a six-pack would be optimum, but if you just have one
or two bottles, this will work as well.
Thanks in advance for helping make this a truly awful event!
4. AleWives on Wheels
For those AleWives and/or Significant Others attending the conference, the
local Chicagoland Alewives have organized a day in downtown Chicago for
those so inclined on Friday, June 20. There is no cost for those with guest
packages or full conference registrations, but the meals are pay as you go.
We will meet for breakfast in conference hotel restaurant, the Metro
Grille, at 8:30 AM, where participants will receive a packet of maps and
other info on entertainment options for a day in downtown Chicago,
including information/locations/schedules for:
Navy Pier - #1 tourist destination in Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago
Terra Museum of American Art
Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago
Art/Craft Festival on Michigan Avenue
Shopping (including discount outlets) on the Magnificent Mile
Architecture and/or General Narrated boat tours of the Chicago River/Lake
Michigan
Double-decker bus tours of downtown Chicago
Architecture Walking Tour of the Magnificent Mile
Bar/restaurant recommendations for lunch/tea/libations
Movie Theater locations/showtimes
Our chartered bus will leave for the Mag Mile at 9:30 AM and pick us up at
3:30 PM for return to the hotel, arriving approximately 4:30 PM. There will
be beer on the bus.
You will need to sign up for this event, either by emailing Nancy Cline at
nnjjccc(a)yahoo.com or using the signup sheet near the registration table at
the conference.
5. The Chicago Beer Society will be presenting "Le Pissoir d'Or," an award
for the club that brings the most beer to the conference. Kegs stashed in
the reefer truck will be tallied as they are stored. Details of how to
tally the rest of your beer will be posted near the registration booth at
the conference.
6. Urban Knaves of Grain sponsored award: "Big Al's Memorial Trophy"
This is a prize for the best overall Club Night presentation (beer, food
and other - like costumes, etc), as voted by attendees. Try to personalize
your space as much as possible. Club members dressing up in a certain
fashion is also an idea. Votes will be tallied, and the winner will be
announced at the "Windy City Big Boys'" Hospitality Room immediately after
the event. To keep up a great Chicago tradition, "vote early and often!"
Bribery is also recommended (^8~.
7. Real Beer Real Food.
This is shaping up as a really enjoyable evening, but it's not too late for
more food exhibitors. So if you know sausage shops, cheesemakers, or any
other craft food producers, we still have room for more. This is a sweet
deal for exhibitors, as all we're looking for is a little donated food.
We're also very flexible about the kind of participation. For more
information, you can download a Fact Sheet on web site, at:
http://www.chibeer.org/aha03/beerfood.html (at the bottom of the page). You
can also email: randymosher(a)rcn.com for more information or to suggest
exhibitors.
8. Volunteers Wanted!
We have a need for some people to help set up some of the afternoon talks
and evening session on Saturday, and perhaps a little errand-running on
Friday and Saturday. Email: randymosher(a)rcn.com if you think you'd be able
to help out.
We hope see you there!
Your pals at BOSS, CBS, and UKG.
