Subject: Upcoming Events!!
Hello Ale Stars,
Were still in the midst of summer, which is normally a quite period for
the
club, but its just been too long since we've gotten together so Ive come
up with a good excuse. I have recently become the proud owner of a real
British beer engine and it needs to be christened (yes, the club now has 2
Beer Engines). I have whipped up a Best Bitter, and all are invited to help
me break it in on Saturday, August 21st. The address is 5002 Oneida St. in
Duluth (218-525-1340) and well begin around the customary start time of
2:00 PMish. Well also have the grill fired up, so bring something to put
on
it for yourself and a side dish to share. And, if you have any home brew,
bring it along too. I was also thinking of brewing in the morning (why not
make a day of it), so if you'd be interested in joining, let me know.
Then as we move into fall, the real action starts
NAS events and meetings:
September 25th will be the Traditional Der Hoag Oktoberfest. Yes, the great
lawn of the Hoag family estate will kick off the Oktoberfest season along
with the usual dancing, merriment and games of chance. Oh yeah, and a lot
of
beer drinking. Be sure to reserve the 25th of September on your calendar.
The Hoags reside at 5426 BearTrap Rd in Saginaw, MN (218-729-6302). Ill
get you more details as the date approaches, but for now, dig out your
lederhosen so youll be ready.
Oktober 21st 24th will be the Fall beer weekend hosted by Greg and Barb
Gecas at Hestons Resort on the Gunflint Trail. The evening of the 21st will
be the traditional "Pub Night" and starting of the festivities. Hestons now
has a brick bread oven, so the theme for the group meal on Saturday night
will be....PIZZAS!!!! Plan to bring your favorite fixins for Brick Oven
Baked Pizzas (this should be real interesting). Be sure to contact Barb and
Greg soon to reserve your spot (218-388-2243).
The November meeting will be held at the home of Bryn Jacobson and Boreal
Bicycles. Time and date TBA.
Other beer events in the region:
- This Saturday, August 14th is the Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison,
WI. However, the event is sold out, so if you don't have tickets, there's
always eBay.
- September 18th will be the second annual Big Lake Brew Fest at the
Wessman
Arena on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Superior. The event
organizers are looking for volunteers from the home brew community to
assist
the brewers in setting up and serving during the event. It will be a great
way to meet a professional brewer, gain some brewing knowledge and maybe
even strike up a working relationship. I mentioned this opportunity in a
past correspondence and a number of members have responded. But there are
still some spots available, so if youre interested (you dont have to be a
member, all home brewers are welcome), send me an e-mail and well get you
matched up with a brewer.
- The 2004 Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Competition is underway, and
you're
invited to enter your homebrewed Beer, Mead and Cider! (Must be a
Minnesota
resident to enter - sorry North Dakotans and Wisconsinites) Deadline for
entry is August 18, 2004. Judging will take place on Aug 21, 2004 on the
weekend before the Fair starts, at the Fairgrounds. Awards Ceremony is at
the Fair on Aug 28, 2004. Help is also needed with judging - you can
register your beers and register for judging online. See
http://www.mnbrewers.com/events/mnfair for more details.
- The Fellowship of Oklahoma Ale Makers (FOAM) invites you to enter, to
judge, and to participate in FOAM Cup 2004. The entry window for this
BJCP-certified competition is September 10-17, with judging set for
September 24 and 25 in Tulsa., OK. The FOAM Cup is part of the High Plains
Brewer Competition. It is the fourth of six High Plains events this year.
Individual and club points earned at FOAM Cup will count toward the 2004
High Plains Brewer of the Year, and Club of the Year awards. Please ship or
deliver your entries to the Mecca Coffee Company in Tulsa, OK to arrive
between September 10 and 17, 2004. The fee for everybody is $6 per entry.
Get all of the details, rules, and entry forms at the FOAM web site,
www.alemakers.com.
Cheers!
Steve
