2005 Fermental Health Tour:
The date and itinerary have been set for the revival of a Northern Ale
Stars
tradition. Beginning Friday, August 26th and continuing through Monday,
August 29th the 2005 Fermental Health Tour, a.k.a. the beer road trip wil
return in grand fashion. The itinerary will be as follows:
Aug. 26th Leave Duluth/Superior and head East with the first stop at
South
Shore Brew Pub in Ashland WI for lunch. Then, load back up and head for
Houghton MI for the night, where we will visit The Library Brew Pub, where
Ale Stars member Bob Jackson is the brewer. Well also visit the new-ish
Keweenaw Brewing while were there.
Aug 27th We travel to Marquette MI for a visit to Jasper Ridge Brewery
and
Brew pub and discover what life is like on the other side of Lake Superior.
Aug 29th We turn tail and head west to Hayward Wisconsin to spend the
night and visit the two brew pubs located there. The Old Hayward Eatery and
Brew Pub and the Angry Minnow (I love that name).
Aug 30th Head back to the Twin Ports, but Im sure well find stops to
make along the way.
All who are interested may participate in the entire trip, or you can
join/leave the beer tour at any point. But we will need to know what nights
you will be with us. Wed like to look into hotel discounts by reserving
blocks of rooms ahead of time.
You need to respond no later than Wednesday, July 13th. Hope to see you!
Change of July meeting date:
The July meeting of the Northern Ale Stars has been changed to July 30th at
2:00 PM-ish. Dave Swenson will be hosting the First Annual Bob Silvernale
Memorial Bocce Tournament and BBQ. More details will follow soon, but be
sure to reserve the date.
Beer Collectors Trade Show:
The 5th annual Beer Collectors Trade Show will be held in the parking lot
next
the Lake Superior Brewery, at 27th Ave. West and Superior Street in Duluth,
on July 9th
2005 from 10am to 2pm. It is a Buy-Sell-Trade (out of your cars trunk or
your
back pocket) show so people can bring items with them. The event also
includes
a free raffle of beer collectibles and tours/tastings of award winning Lake
Superior Brews.
More information call Chris at (218) 349-6561.
2005 All-Club Campout:
We have a group of Ale Stars who will be joining other homebrew clubs from
around the area at the 2005 Minnesota All-Club Campout, to be held August
5-7, and invite all interested members and non-members to join us. This
years spectacular extravaganza will be a new experience as it will be held
in the great northern woods of Minnesota. Nestled in the grand Chippewa
National Forest and on Cass Lake, Nushka Group Campground will provide us
with two large group campsites (tents, campers, etc. OK), two picnic
shelters to help curb potential weather, trails down to the lake, and
basically oodles of space and ambiance to satisfy our needs. Plus, we will
have the entire campground so there is no one to disturb and yet we are
close enough to civilization, with the town of Cass Lake nearby, to make
any
last minute needs convenient. Cost will only be $10 per person for the
whole weekend, so you cant beat the price.
Of course, there are the festivities to entice you further. The
prestigious
title of Master of Malt is up for grabs again at the traditional Saturday
competition so fire up your brew-pots and see if you can knock off the
defending champion. At last years competition Susan Ruud form The Prairie
Homebrewing Companions took the title and has called the categories for
this
year to be open ale, lager, mead, and Belgian. An added plus to the
competition will be a special category and award for best cask conditioned
ale that is served, as the Brits would say, from stillage. Clubs can
enter 1 beer per category with exception to the cask conditioned ales which
are unlimited. Bring on your best.
Saturday also happens to be AHA National Mead Day. Since it would not be
right to neglect such a day with all those Mead makers in one place, a Mead
brewing session has been planned and the site will be officially registered
with the AHA. At least one batch of mead will be made and it would be
great
to have more so bring along your equipment and enjoy the opportunity. By
the way, for those who are a little skeptical of this, mead has been made
in
the wild while camping in the past and has turned out great.
If all this wasnt enough, Saturday night brings a grand feast provided in
full by the Prairie Homebrewing Companions. This group is also skilled in
the culinary arts so expect an excellent meal to round out the great
scenery, quality beers and meads, good friends, and good times. If all
that, for only $10, cannot get you excited for this event then I am at a
loss. Directions and a little more info is included below. If you have
any
questions or comments, feel free to e-mail me at
northernalestars(a)hotmail.com. I really hope to see you all there.

Big Lake Brewfest:
The 3rd Annual Big Lake Brewfest is Saturday, September 17, 2005, 4:00 -
