New subject: [mnbrewers] Sample from Carboy
I use a "Beer Thief" and a Hydrometer jar - I know Midwest Homebrewing
carries them both. The Beer Thief is a carboy-long cylinder with a valve on
the bottom which opens to let beer in, then closes when you withdraw it from
the carboy. It's not a perfect seal, so I then transfer the beer to a
hydrometer jar - a tube with a base on it. Sanitize the Beer Thief and
plunge it into the carboy to get your sample, and transfer it to the
hydrometer jar. Put the hydrometer in the Hydrometer jar and get your
reading. Do NOT return the sample to the carboy....

We at WindRiver Brewing also carry such a device ...
I have returned ths eamp[le to the carboy (but I made
sure that the hydrometer was sanitized).
But usually I keep the sample (especially after it has
fermented to see how it tastes!!)

If you use a long pipette, it'll take forever to get enough of a sample to
float a hydrometer in and I guarantee it will break. Al's suggestion of
using the beer thief is the way to go.
