I've been using my chest freezer off and on for several years for
lagering...haven't run into problems or heard about this before.
Although I have heard that excessive moisture buildup can cause
them to rust out...I dunno...

 but I have read recently that running a chest freezer at less than 32 F. in

  that on/off manner would burn out the freezer
prematurely.
