Summertime: Reminiscence and Anticipation
After a whirlwind trip to Minneapolis for the AHA Conference, we're back on
track with another issue of What's Brewing. As we look back at our biggest
(and possibly best!) AHA Conference ever, we're already geared up for Mead
Day in August and our annual pilgrimage to Denver for the Great American
Beer Festival (GABF). We hope you find this compilation of articles
interesting and informative and we look forward to seeing many of you again
at GABF in September.

AHA Conference Wrap-Up
June saw the 32nd annual National Homebrewers Conference come to
Minneapolis, Minn. It was our largest conference ever, but if you weren't
one of the 1,300 homebrewers who descended on the upper Midwest last month,
you can still get a glimpse of the fun through the many great photos and
resources are posted online:

Gear up for Mead Day
Since 2002 we've been celebrating Mead Day every August, and this year's big
event is Saturday, August 7. If you're a mead aficionado, invite some
friends over and introduce them to the delicious fun that mead has to offer.

The Rise and Fall of New Albion Brewery
Looking at the shelves of most beer stores these days, it can be easy to
forget that a little over 30 years ago there were few retail options aside
from the offerings of large breweries that survived Prohibition. That was
until John "Jack" McAuliffe came along and opened New Albion Brewing in
Sonoma, California in 1976.
What he did was extraordinary for the time but frustratingly short lived.
Before New Albion went belly up, however, McAuliffe was able to inspire
other brewers to follow his lead and, in the process, create breweries that
have become household names. Read more on

Member Survey Results
A big "thank you" goes out to the 3,265 AHA members who took the time to
share information about their homebrewing practices. Both the AHA Survey
Sub-Committee and the AHA staff appreciate your input and support. We will
use the results
