I don't think it hurts to have a president or any other high or even low, political official on board with the hobby, at whatever level he participates. It just struck me that any contempt for the president's brewing skill coming from that off-the-cuff response of Mikes was directed toward any bigwig boasted as a "home brewer" who turned out to be somewhat less than deep into the arts and crafts of the hobby. I took Mike and Jeff's commentary as exactly that--finding out after a lot of buildup about president Obama being a big home brew enthusiast, that he's at least allegedly or assumedly having the maid and the butler and the kitchen staff keep his fermenters clean and perform all that untidy brew-potting and racking off, rather than finding out he was actually down in the basement bending tubing and making his own lagering tank and bodging hoses together making jerry-rigged siphon rigs and whatnot, like most "normal" home brewers. I can see Jimmy and Billy Carter down there doing that for fun and relaxation. It would have been neat if Obama was that sort of home brewer too, but if no, well at least he's got a toe in the water. And a little poke in the ribs at extract brewers is always well-deserved. Like commercial cider makers who use Chinese concentrates from 55 gal drums of powder and balance it all out with malic acid, a little tannic acid, and a squirt of "apple essence."

How is it that this president gets credit for brewing?  Like many issues, people have these ideas about him and for the life of me, I don’t get it.  He is not a brewer, never has brewed, and probably won’t until he leaves the White house this January and retires in Hawaii.  It’s the White house chefs that brew!  Everybody should pay more attention to the facts.

Maybe then he’ll have time in between Ellen, The View, and golf.

I am certain Obama will be making at least one pit stop in the Cities before the election.

 

I propose we send him an invitation to visit with us for tasting some of our brews (and we in turn will get to taste the White House brews that travel with him).  Wonder if other brew clubs have extended such an invitation.  Let's be the first!  Or, let's not be the only one that didn't extend an invitation.

 

Do we, as a club, need to vote on this proposal?  If so, please consider this as a motion put forth by me.  We need someone to second the motion and then open up discussion prior to casting our ballots.
