Jim E, I think you answered the wrong question. Jim V asked if he should take a reading
before returning to boil, not just of the first runnings. It is important to take a
reading at the beginning of the boil. This is your last chance to make adjustments. If you
are low on the gravity mark you
can add dry malt or adjust the hops to have the bittering balance you want. If your
gravity is high you have time to add more hops or prepare more water for a larger batch.
In any case, if you have a target gravity at the end of the boil you should know the
gravity at the beginning of the boil. (I say this at the risk of starting a calculation
thread)
Speaking of mashing, w/ my manifold, I underlet the
mash water.
W/ the false bottom, it was very important to "establish" the
foundation. That is, fill the mash tun w/ hot/strike water up
to the top of the false bottom before adding the grain.>
