I have a few commemorative Mash-Out glasses left for anyone who missed the
Mash-Out awards ceremony or pub crawl. They are $3 each, 4 for $10. I'll
have them available at the Rahr tour if you're interested.

Subject: Tour Rahr Malting and with the Minnesota Homebrewers
Ladies and Gentlemen, Beer fans and brewers,
The Minnesota Homebrewers association is scheduled to tour Rahr malting
this
Saturday, May 10 @ 13:00 or 1:00 pm. The location is the largest
single malting site in the world located in our back yard. The facility is
located just west of "old Shakopee" on Hwy 13.
What do I need to do to go? Thanks for asking. Bring beer (good beer)
for our
hosts. Remember, these guys malt barley - lots of barley. Do you
think they enjoy beer?
Become a new member or meet some current members. Membership applications
are
always available and as an added benefit, we have some preliminary
membership cards good for 1 year. These cards entitle you to elete
privelages and a few discounts at local homebrewing stores.
What else? Well, consider bringing a camera. Rahr malting is an
extremely tall
building and if the weather is decent, the tour may include a
view from the roof. The tour will take you through the complete process of
seeping, sprouting, kilning and they may be transferring some malt if we are
lucky to catch the action. The aroma in this building is incredible and
reinforces the aroma and flavor profile you taste in beer.
The primary delievery and shipping method for Rahr is via rail although
many grain
trucks arrive from Canada and the Dakotas every day.
So there you have it. Let's review.
1. Saturday, May 10, 1:00 sharp
2. Meet by house #5 on the west side of the facility (across from the
dairy queen.
3. Bring your best beer for the hosts of the day. Be
generous - no
ringers
4. Bring your camera and a few dollars.
5. After the tour, drive to New Shakopee (ok, I made that name up) and
meet at
Harkwells steak house.
6. Meet Dave Luskey who is a Rahr employee and fellow
homebrewer.
Need more? Sure? How about doing something on Friday the 13th?
June 13 (yes folks, it's Friday the 13th) and June 14. Camp out in
Mankato.
The camp ground is located in Mankato and sounds quite nice.
Nothing formal or exceptional and hopefully, the weather will be better
behaved than it was at last summer's weather extravaganza at the club
campout. Saturday we will take a backroads tour up to Schells and tour the
brewery. If you are driving down on Saturday, try to meet us at Schells in
the early afternoon. After the tour, we go back down to Mankato via a
special winery.
Enough? Never! OK then, when we return to Mankato, we tour Bandana or at
least go
there. I truly miss Dave's beverages and will be bringing along
some of the Ol Longshot produced with his culture!
So there you have it. Live and direct from the basement brewery - not
from the
office.
Before I send this, Let me send you all a tremendous thanks for all of
your
efforts supporting the BJCP classes, the homebrew stores that supported
the judging sessions, the big event at Summit, all of the background work
required to get those wonderful door prizes, and thanks to all the
supporters, spouses, significant others, vendors, (does this sound like the
Oscars?) and lastly, to Jimmie Carter for allowing this hobby to occur
legally in the comforts of our homes. Last but not least, a tremendous
thanks to Al Boyce for his tremendous and extreme efforts with contest
orginization and to Johathan Christ for the amazing orginization of judging
results - we should all be amazed that the contest results were available
the last day of judging.
Lastly (I'm snipping ok?) Judging for Scotch and Old Ale AHA Club-Only
competition will be at Al's house on Wednesday, May 14. If you have any
beers in that category or you would like to help pick the club entry to the
National Club-Only event contact Al via email or call him at 952-927-8968.
Redundancy got us back from the moon!
