Yet another good reason to use a real kettle. Stainless is a pour conductor of heat. Therefore there are lage temperature gradients in the SS. These gradients generate tremndous thermal stress. High temperatures at the "ring" can result in the chrome migrating out of solution w/ the nickel and the iron, making for a brittle material. Too bad John Isenhauer isn't around to tell us about the keg ring that he branded into his carpet with a converted keg full of wart. Boil was long over, but the rings was still hot enough to burn the carpet.
