Lowenbrau brewed in Munich has always had a certain following. Over a
decade ago, production was shifted to Miller's breweries in the U.S.
Though Miller steadfastly claimed to be using the same recipe and
ingredients, it just wasn't the same; it was weak. It was Miller-ized.
More recently, production was shifted to LaBatt in Canada. The bottles
said "Imported", but the fine print told the story, and LaBatt-brewed
Lowenbrau was not much different from Miller-brewed Lowenbrau. Sales
were never that good, because the product in the bottle was still weak.
Now, distribution of Munich-brewed Lowenbrau is back. I found some at a
local Jewell supermarket. The beer in the bottle, which is what really
matters, is the real thing. There is a clean malt crispness and a gentle
hop bite that is unmistakably genuine. Lowenbrau is definitely back.
They probably figured there was not much to lose. The Western-Hemisphere
brewed product was not selling, so why not try bringing it in from
Munich again. I note that LaBatt is the importer.
