I bottle condition in 2L growlers all the time, and haven't had any issues. But I
have the flip-top variety (both with and without the metal handles). They work great.
But I've heard there are issues with screw tops; they won't hold the pressure.

Glass is cheap. I'd roll those dice.
Also, check out this kickstarter for force carbing in a wide mouth growlers.

Hey, gang,
Using all 12- and 22-oz. bottles for a batch is sometimes tiring, but without a dedicated
fridge/freezer, five gallons of homebrew in a keg gets a little cooked this time of year.
I was looking at the myriad growlers lying about my house, and thought, "Those are a
great size--each is five bottles worth, but is faster to clean and fill and cap than five
12-oz. bottles. The growlers fit easily in the regular fridge, and there are many
instances where I'm going to drink/share five beers in a session anyway."
I asked at Northern Brewer, and the guy told me that many people throw some carb pills in
a growler and fill it up. He steered me toward the plastic growler caps. I also looked
at many online forums, and some people say that it should never be attempted, while plenty
of folks say that they've bottled dozens of batches solely in growlers with no
issues.
What say ye? I already did four growlers worth last night, but please let me know if I
should put these in a tub under a tarp for the eventual explosion. :) I cannot reason
why they would explode, but the naysayers claim it's going to happen.
Thanks,
John
