Battle of the Beers - The Belgian Broil.
Belgian vs. American - Belgian vs. Belgian-American

Michael Agnew of A Perfect Pint will be here on Monday Feb 2nd at 6:30pm for another vicious battle of the beers.

Event costs $15. There are 35 spots only. There will be a lottery drawing to pick the participants, to enter the lottery email alvey@thefourfirkins.com with the subject line Belgian Broil. You will receive and email on Thursday the 29th if you make it in. Pay on the night. Good luck!

Here's how Michael describes the event:

"Belgium! To some it is the world axis of beer and brewing. Its beer culture and brewing tradition spans centuries and encompasses some of the most complex and satisfying beer styles known. Since the
dawning days of the American Craft Beer movement, Belgian brews from the pious Trappists to the sassy sours have served as muse, inspiring imitation, interpretation, and adulation from a host of American brewers. But now the tables have turned. New crews of Belgian brewers have turned their vision westward and are furiously remaking American styles in return. Heeding the "more, more, more" cry of the American brewers, the Belgians are hefting heaps of hops into re-envisioned, Belgian-inflected Double IPAs. It has become a case of cross-cultural inoculation. But this begs the question...whose beer is better?

The lines have been drawn for an epic battle of the beers; a Belgian brouhaha in three rounds. Which country will emerge victorious from the crucible of Firkin Forum?  You will be the judge.  Let the Belgian Broil begin!"

WinterCoat Brewing
Denmark.

The WinterCoat brewery is a family-owned and operated brewery situated on an old farm just outside of the village of Sabro in Denmark. Niels J. Thomsen, owner and brewer, was born in the farmhouse. The brewery has a capacity of 8 hectolitres, and they can brew this 4 times a week. Niels Thomsen and his wife, Dísa Fink are the sole workforce behind the brewery. We produce mainly  English-inspired beers (ales), 8 of which are available year-round, supplemented by 4-6 seasonal brews.

Here at the Firkins we just got our first two beers from them:

                                                                          Vild
Vildmoseol:
Subtle notes of peat-smoked malt, the fresh spiciness of bog myrtle and the bittersweet fruitiness of rowan berries. These 3 ingredients harmonise beautifully with the other malts and hops used. A wonderful beer to drink with game, lamb and braised meats - and it does justice to pickled herring as
well!

DoubleHop:
WinterCoat's Imperial IPA is light amber in color. The fruitiness from the ale yeast combines beautifully with the body of the malts and the freshness of the hops to create a very well-balanced, though very heavily hopped brew. Double Hop has a heady hop aroma without too much bitterness. The smooth taste belies its 8.2% alcohol content. This beer is dangerously pleasant to drink!

Schell Bock
All new recipe for 2009

Each year the promise of spring was confirmed as the first keg os Schell's Bock rolled onto waiting delivery wagons. And since 1860, Schell's Bock has continued in the true German tradition. Completely reformulated for 2009, Schell's Bock has replaced Caramel Bock as our late winter seasonal. Brewed
with a harmonious blend of 10 different types of malt and noble hops, Schell's Bock is fermented slowly, and then lagered for an extended period of time to ensure a smooth finish. Perfect for passing even the coldest winter day.
