The AP wire copy on twincities.com really struck out on the point (as did I for passing it along without reading the text of the bill). The rep. has brought this up in the session b/c one of constituents was trying to rent out some commercial space to a business that was interested in having a restaurant, but also brewing tea in the basement. Apparently there is a Prohibition-era law against basement brewing, likely to cut down on bootlegging, that is still in effect. Thus, her constituents were being denied the legal right to rent it out as such. I do wonder how brewpubs and breweries work into the equation.... Herkimer and Barley John's have basement facilities. But I'm sure that's a whole other set of laws that have been solidify and suck to deal with on a whole other scale. Again, says the rep., no homebrewer connection to this bill. Feel free to continue brewing in your basement (like you were going to stop anyway?).
