Bell's no longer do the dozen-or-so Stouts in November, only the
year-round K'zoo & Expedition, and Double Cream & Cherry in November.
This year Larry is doing the "Wheat Project" - 4 beers-in-series and one
strong wheat ale to follow that. The first, Wheat 2, is already on at
the pub. I have more info if anyone is interested, and I believe there
should be info available on their web page soon.

Country Food and Liquors was definitely the place that
I remember. Several
folks have mentioned Sams Wine & Liquors which I visit almost every time I go
to Goose, BUT I do not recall seeing that they sell individual bottles of
beers and let you build you own 6-packs. This is what I remember the most and
why I'd drive 1 1/2 hours down to Country Food and Liquors for, to be able to
try new beers that may or may not be to my liking and be able to just buy 1
or 2 bottles.
For example, this is the season where Bell's puts out about a dozen or so
Stouts. I'd love to be able to find somewhere where I could purchase 2 bottles
of each effectively creating my own sampler pack... back when Country Food
and Liquors was in business, it was possible..
Thanks again for the info...

I believe the place in question was called Worlds End probably named due to
its close >proximity to the World Music theatre down 191st St. It was a
liquor store and homebrew >supply shop. I think it was in the planning to be a
brewpub also but that never came to be.
Years ago friends of mine used to live on a farm
that was on the same site
and we got the >beer from Country Food and Liquors which is further south on
LaGrange Rd. Rt. 45.

That was Country Food and Liquors. It was an
excellent store, and not
that hard to get to either, just off I-80. I think the story was that it
was the landlord of their building who wasn't paying the taxes, so of
course the IRS took it out on his lessors and paddlocked their
businesses, even though they had been paying their rent to the cheating
landlord. The whole thing dissolved into a tangled web of lawsuits,
counter-suits, and bankruptcies which probably just funneled all the
remaining money to the lawyers. Similar story led to the final demise of
Tap & Growler Brewpub, in the current Jak's Tap space Downtown.
Best now? Sam's, without a doubt. Incredible depth of selection, all at
good prices, and busy enough that you will rarely get skunked. Deli
counter, though pricey, is always tantalizing. Sometimes I walk past it
just to soak in the fabulous aromas. Binny's has a peculiar problem.
Fairly good at the high end, but they refuse to carry Pabst Blue Ribbon,
so when I go beer shopping there I have to make two stops - Binny's for
the high-end, and then on to Da Jewell for my 30-pack of PBR. Sam's has
both in one convenient stop.

Best in Chicagoland now??? I'd say
Sam's but others may say Binnys or
Armanetti's. Sorry, I'm out of the loop somewhat. I go to Sam's and
then over to Whole Foods or Trader Joes when I'm in Chicago. They turn
over product at these stores so you're not so likely to get a bad
bottle...

Subject: Beer by the Bottle?
Many years ago there used to be liquor store ( that also sold some
homebrew supplies) way down south of I-80 on Lagrange Road (Rt 45).
They sold just about every beer they carried in some large coolers by
the bottle as well and was a great way to experiment and try many
different beers without investing in a 6 pack. I used to bring a cooler
and buy a couple of cases of beers all different. To make a long story
short, I drove by that location several months ago, ( the first time in
probably 8 years) and it is no longer there : ( Does anyone know of
any liquor stores anywhere in the Chicagoland area that has a large
selection of beers by the bottle?
Thanks,
John
