is a much better explanation of Nonic.

My understanding is that the bulge on the "nonic" glass is to prevent the
glasses from clinking together on the shelf, or wherever they are stored, or hastily
grabbed by a bar wench from a pub table, etc, thus preventing "nicks" in the
drinking edge. "No nick" became nonic. (some guy naked "Nick"
probably threatened a law suit)
