This is an invitation-only judging event limited to experienced judges that have passed the BJCP exam at the certified or higher level, or that have obtained other credentials that qualify for this event. First and second round judging will take place on Friday January 22, 2016, starting at 4:45 PM sharp (please try to show up a little early - parking is always difficult if you are driving). The Best-of-Show round of judging will take place from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 23, 2016. A few of you will be contacted separately about judging the Best-of-Show round on Saturday in a second e-mail to come later once I know who is available. Please note that judging space is limited. An invitation and returned confirmation of your availability does not guarantee a judging assignment. Judges are selected from the pool that promptly responds to this inquiry as well as their BJCP ranking and other qualifications. Judges selected for the first, second, and Best-of-Show round will be notified in a follow-up notice around January 5, 2015. We do our best to include everyone that attends the festival. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are traveling so that I can confirm your judging seat early. Unfortunately the festival does not offer lodging or travel reimbursement. If you are traveling watch for Alaska Beer Week events on Facebook as there will be many planned events leading up to the festival. As in previous years, if you donate your time to judge beer you will receive a free pass to the festival for the entire weekend, including the connoisseur's session on Saturday afternoon. Some of you on this invite list may be affiliated (e.g., employee, owner, or distributor) with a brewery that is entering a barely wine or winter seasonal beer. If this is the case, please note that you are not eligible to judge. With the double-blind judging format that we follow, it is too difficult to guarantee that you are not judging your own beer, or one that you represent. 2015 club cider buy

Cider lovers, We will be doing another Club Cider Buy this year at Barley John's during Learn to Homebrew Day on November 7th. As usual we will try to arrive near the beginning of the event, but these things always take longer than expected so if you are on a tight schedule please find someone else to take care of your pickup (and let me know in advance). The price will be $4 a gallon and you will need to supply your own 5 gallon vessel(s), ideally 5 gallon buckets. Please let me know how much you would like in 5 gallon quantities by emailing me directly. Once again I would like people to prepay to reduce some of the complications the day of. I would prefer you use Square <https://square.com/cash> (free and easy), Paypal (note you will need to have your bank account linked and send it as a friends & family transaction to not incur a fee. If you want to use a credit card you will need to choose to pay the additional fee yourself. Expect Bad Weather on Saturday, October 17th!

The next MHBA meeting will be on Saturday, October 17th, at Bad Weather Brewing in Saint Paul. Their beautiful new tap room opens for business on Friday the 9th (with a soft opening two nights earlier, but I didn't tell you that), and we will invade their overflow area from noon to three on the 17th. Homebrew is welcome, but please bring it in surreptitiously. Andy the head brewer will be on hand to show off all his new shiny things to interested parties. As always, if you bring at least a six-pack, growler, or keg of your latest creation, then you earn credit in the Brewers of Fame program (see website for details--offer not valid in Puerto Rico or Guam). You may always bring smaller amounts (e.g., your last bottle of gold-medal mead), but the point of providing a six-pack of one beer is for us to have a group conversation about that particular beer. We'll focus the attention on you and your beer for a few minutes, and everyone gets to try it simultaneously, which facilitates better edgimucation for all! As long as you have your calendars out, please mark down Saturday, November 7th at Barley John's for the traditional Learn to Brew Day. Jonathan Beckel has once again graciously agreed to procure 500 gallons of cider for people to purchase. This is a mildly-heroic and much-appreciated undertaking, so please be grateful to Jonathan! He has stated that sign-up will begin later this week. Then, on Sunday, December 13th, we have the annual Christmas Party! This will be from noon to five at the C.S.P.S.
