Susan,
Sign me up to proctor.
Everyone else - please provide some guidelines for your availability (days of week and times typically open). I have a couple small ones and a wife that is grinding through law school, so late evenings are best for me but I can be somewhat flexible.
I have not taken the online exam and cannot offer a lot of guidance there, but I would take it early. I want to make sure everyone has done it before class starts so we can skip over the procedural part and go right to evaluation / score sheets / etc.
Cheers,
Dave

Dave – sorry, a bit late – hopefully you are still planning on running a short class. Here are all those who signed up. I leave it in your capable hands now. Hopefully since you will be tasting beers with these examinees you will be available to help proctor the exam on April 26th.
Hi Everyone, Here is the info on the BJCP exam coming up on April 26th – Sunday morning 9:30 am. Exam is 1.5 hours so will be out of there by 11. Come about 20 min early to fill out paperwork. Address: 3101 39th St. S. Suite E.
http://www.bjcp.org/examcenter.php - this is the BJCP Exam web page – lots of info there. Some of the highlights are below but you should spend some time on this page.
Exam Study Guide: This is your bible. http://www.bjcp.org/docs/BJCP_Study_Guide.pdf
Exam program description: http://www.bjcp.org/docs/BJCP_Exam_Program.pdf
Judge procedures manual; http://www.bjcp.org/judgeprocman.phphttp://www.bjcp.org/docs/OffFlavorFlash.pdf - Off flavors flashcards – quite helpful
Style guidelines in almost any format you prefer: http://www.bjcp.org/stylecenter.php
BJCP Beer Studies – Beer Appreciation and Exam Preparation,
http://www.bjcp.org/course - this is new since I took the exam – it looks great.
The online exam costs $10 – I believe there is a discount if you feel you will need to take it more than once – you can sign up for 3 takes – can’t remember the cost.
The tasting exam is $40.00 the first time and $15.00 for retakes.
For new people taking the exam – keep in mind that altho there is a lot of material – it takes years to really learn all of this – to become a recognized judge you only need 60% on the exam – so study to learn all of it and you should get the 60%.
Do not leave the online exam till the last minute. You can retake the exam once every 24 hours – take it once early to get a feel for it – if you pass – great – if not you can see where you are at – study some more and retake. You have to have the online exam taken before you take the tasting exam. No exceptions are made.
Have fun with this studying – you are studying beer – always when reviewing the style guidelines – have a beer you have purchased from that category and taste it, think about it and enjoy it while reviewing the guidelines. In what other class are you told to drink beer while studying.
Cheers,
Susan

Subject: New Guide for Growing Hops in Minnesota

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MIGHTY AXE HOPS PUBLISHES HOPS GROWING GUIDE FOR MINNESOTA GROWERS
April 21, 2015
TO WHOMEVER ENJOYS CRAFT BEER
Minnesota’s exploding craft beer industry has not only produced delicious beer but has also created demand for high-quality, local hops. And lots of ‘em. To that end, we produced the Minnesota Hops Grower’s Guide.
The Minnesota Hops Grower’s Guide is not intended to be the end-all-be-all of hops growing, it is simply an honest account of our experience as local hops growers. While the guide is written for a commercial scale, homebrewers and backyard hops gardeners alike can glean new techniques that will make for better yields and tastier hops. The guide covers everything about local, sustainable hops production: design, install, planting, management, harvest, and postharvest handling.
The Minnesota Hops Grower’s Guide is available for free download at: www.MightyAxeHops.com/category/grow-hops/
"The Minnesota hops industry is young but growing fast. With so many people jumping in - from backyard gardens to the full scale commercial productions - we wanted to create a practical resource for anyone thinking through the (awesome) idea of growing hops.” - Benjamin Boo, Chief Horticulturalist Mighty Axe Hops.

Subject: Summit releases Hopvale Organic Ale

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Summit releases Hopvale Organic Ale
A USDA Certified Organic Session Ale
St. Paul, Minn - (March 30, 2015) -
Summit Brewing Company today announces the release of Hopvale Organic Ale, a balanced, refreshing session beer available year-round on draught and in 16oz can 4-packs the first week of April.
With the hop character of a full-strength IPA, but the drinkability of a low gravity Bitter, Hopvale seeks to deliver a noticeable hop punch while being seriously sessionable at 4.7% ABV. Notes of grapefruit, pine resin, lemon rind and tangerine feature prominently in the aroma, while the malt blend supports a thirst-quenching bitterness.
“Summit’s ongoing commitment to using the highest quality of ingredients inspired the addition of an organic beer into our year-round line up of brews,” said Head Brewer Damian McConn.
The organic barley is sourced from Montana and Wyoming and the organic hops come from family farms in Washington and Idaho. The organic lemon peel, sourced in Southern California, adds an additional degree of complexity to the beer’s final profile. Organic cultivation ensures that a great degree of care and attention is required for the production of these ingredients, leading to assertive flavors and unique aromas in the final beer.
