Gary, Andrew, Jake, Al
I decided to copy all of you in one email, having communicated with each of
you either by phone or previous emails.
The Minnesota homebrewing legislation has been introduced. The bills are
HF2999
<https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bills/bill.php?b=House&f=HF2999&ssn=0&y=2014>
and SF2604
<https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bills/bill.php?f=SF2604&y=2014&ssn=0&b=senate> .
After long discussions, and a great deal of worry, we went ahead with this.
The discussions with some of you focused on the Deer River event, and
concern about the perception of sales of alcohol due to an entry fee. The
Deer River Chamber of Commerce will straighten that out, as it's their
event.
But while Deer River was a catalyst, the sleeping dog waking up, we did not
move forward to promote or save the Deer River event. It is simply one of
the events we support. There are other events we support, and still more
we'd like to support. We are focusing on the public sharing of homebrew,
something we have been trying to do as a club for years. We have repeatedly
tried to turn Big Brew Day into a public event, a six-hour ongoing
exhibition of brewing, as you can see at our 2009
<http://www.borealbrewers.com/whats-brewing/club-brews/big-brew-day-2009/> ,
2010
<http://www.borealbrewers.com/whats-brewing/club-brews/big-brew-day-2010/>
and 2013
<http://www.borealbrewers.com/whats-brewing/club-brews/2013-big-brew-day-may
-5th/> Big Brew events. For 2011
<http://www.borealbrewers.com/whats-brewing/club-brews/2010-big-brew/> and
2012
<http://www.borealbrewers.com/whats-brewing/club-brews/2012-big-brew-day-may
-6th/> we went to private property. We always run into the lack of
supporting statute when we try to arrange to serve samples. We hope to
change that, as we support a number of community events, partner events
<http://www.borealbrewers.com/whats-brewing/fun-beer-events-supported-by-bor
eal-brewers/2013-kaxe-celebration/> with KAXE Radio and would like to be a
positive presence for the homebrewing craft.
The MN Senate Commerce Committee will hear SF2604 on Wednesday, March 19,
along with sixteen other alcohol related bills. The session begins at noon,
and both Chad Haatvedt, also of the Boreal Brewers, and I will be there.
Chad and I will also make it to any other hearings to provide any testimony
or explanation of intent required.
We do want to avoid any negative outcomes, such as the measure failing, and
attention suddenly focusing on homebrewing events. But we did have an event
get shut down, right now we have a sympathetic bill author in each house,
both in the majority, and the proposed change is very simplistic in wording.
We have hopes and worries aplenty.
I will send out an email today to all the MN clubs for whom I have an
address, and will keep them and you informed as other hearings arise. I've
attached our talking points document.

Talking with Paul Illa we wanted to bring a little insight and
discussion about the California Common/Steam Beer. The most obvious
example is Anchor Steam beer. A lager hybrid fermented in a costal
environment at ale temps. Paul found a great older BYO article at
http://byo.com/stories/item/2123-california-common-style-profile that
discusses the origins of a steam beer. Jamil Zainasheff is the writer
who is a excellent beer knowledge source. What other versions have you
had? Have you brewed one? What was your process?
This month's Style of the Month article can be found at
http://www.mnbrewers.com/style-month-california-common/
A couple of notes here.
First: Sankey kegs run about $200, so PLEASE don't steal them.
If you can find a leaker that's been scrapped by a brewer/owner (not somebody
jonesing for a fix) - that's a different story. BUT
Second: SS is a lousy conductor - Aluminum works much better in a direct fired system.
No hot spots, no scorching, even doing a decoction.
Third: Commercial breweries use SS in part because it can survive the harsh chemicals used for cleaning. (CIP)
You shouldn't use those either, IMNSHO.
Off Peak Brewer Carl Eidbo has (had) an all electric brewery and it works fine for Carl - but he's a
physicist. A COTS water heater would make a better hot liq tank and thos are affordable.
Cheers,
Jim

Hi Scott,
I highly recommend Hans Early-Nelson, whose business is called ?Primitive Precision Metalcraft? in Minneapolis. He does a lot of art metal, but he used to work doing sanitary welding and did a beautiful job on all of the tri-clover fittings on my 30 gal electric system. He welded all of the fittings from the inside and they have a mirror-like finish. He was quite economical as well. I will certainly go back to him for my next welding project.

Does anyone have any references for welders in the twin cities area?
Preferably someone who has welded keggles before.
I am thinking about switching from propane to electric this spring and am
weighing the pros and cons of having someone weld the fittings in for my
elements vs. going with a silver solder approach.
Thanks!
Here is a bill working its way through the Minnesota legislature. You might
want to get in touch with your State congresspeople and senators and let
them know your thoughts about it!
Pass this along to other hombrew clubs.

I got this from Andrew Schmitt of Minnesota Beer Activists.
Authors: Sen Tom Saxhaug and Rep Tom Anzelc.
See attachment for possible language to be drafted.
The language here closely mirrors what is in the federal law. It doesn't
specifically address serving to the public which seems to be the issue that
Steve Benson's club was pushing, so I'm not sure what to make of it.

Subject: NHC First Round in St Paul Needs Judges
Signup for Judges and Stewards is now open:
http://firstround.mashout.org/
The Twin Cities will again be a judging site for the first round of the
National Homebrew Competition, and we'd love to have your help. Please mark
your calendars! Dates for the competition will be April 11 and 12, with
judging sessions at 3 and 6pm on Friday the 11th, and 9, 12:30 and 3 on the
12th.
This year, volunteers who sign up for two or more sessions will also be
entered into a raffle for a chance to buy 2 guaranteed tickets to the
national conference!
More details will be announced when the signup opens in the next few weeks.
We'll be in touch!
Once again, it is time for our annual Chili Cook-Off Competition!
We will be exercising our taste buds next Saturday, March 15 from 2:00pm
to 5:00pm at the CSPS Hall.
There are three categories in which you can enter:
Red Chili – meat, but NO beans
Chili with Beans – not really chili, but we’re here to have fun!
Open – green, vegetarian, white, whatever
You can help out by bringing your chili ready to eat in crock pots and
bringing along extension cords, power strips, and serving utensils.
Bowls, spoons, and napkins will be provided. If you’re not entering a
chili dish, please bring something else to share with the group. We want
to make sure there is enough things to eat for everyone who shows up.
We could really use 4 to 6 folks to show up one hour earlier and some
folks to stay a little later so that there are enough people to set up
and break down the tables.
We will be looking for judges for each of the categories and have
everyone vote for their favorite overall. The winner of each category
gets a prize and the People’s Choice winner gets a prize and the honor
of bringing home the Chief Chili Pepper trophy!
The March meeting also features a swap meet. Bring things you no longer
need. You can sell them, use beer currency, give them away,
even swap!
Of course, we welcome all the home brew you would like to bring to the
meeting, especially beers that go well with chili. We even like meads
and ciders.
You can find all the info and address on the calendar page for this
event at
http://www.mnbrewers.com/events/event/march-meeting-chili-cookoff-contest-2/
Reminder that the Social event at Sociable Cider Werks is happening
tomorrow, Thursday, March 6th at Sociable Cider Werks starting at 6:00pm.
The weather looks to be great and no snow storms will interrupt us this
time!
Check out the calendar event at
