Dear Fellow
Homebrewers,
(Administrators,
please forward this to your club list)
Announcing the 16th
annual Land
of the Muddy Waters Homebrew Competition.
Complete details can be found at www.mugzhomebrew.org/lotmw
This AHA/BJCP-sanctioned contest is organized by MUGZ (Mississippi Unquenchable Grail Zymurgists). LOTMW 2010 is one of the last qualifying events for Midwest Brewer of the Year. We are in need of judges for LOTMW 2010 to be held on November 13th, 2010. This year’s competition will again be held at Blue Cat Brew Pub, in historic downtown Rock Island, IL.
As in the past, we will be hedonically judging a special category called the Land of the Muddy Water, as well as having a label contest. Refer to our website for complete details www.mugzhomebrew.org/lotmw
We anticipate the need to have enough judges to cover 250+ entries. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided at 8 AM the morning of the competition as well as lunch between sessions at the Blue Cat. Judges with walk-in entries must pre-register them before the entry deadline as stated on the website. Please have walk-in entries there no later than 8:00
AM. Judging will begin at 9:00 AM and we expect to wrap up for the awards ceremony and festivities between 4PM and 5PM. For more information, visit www.mugzhomebrew.org/lotmw
If you plan on judging please take the time to register as a judge on our website
Key Dates:
Oct 18th - Nov. 5th.

Subject: Hoppy Halloween Judges Needed!
Hello Regional Judges,
If you have not signed up to help judge at Hoppy Halloween this year, please
consider doing so now! We set out to make Hoppy Halloween's 13 anniversary
special and fun. The response from the homebrew community was not only
positive, it is looking like it's about to blow our highest expectations
away (yesterday we received entries from Puerto Rico!). If you have a
chance to help out October 27th, 29th and/or 30th we would greatly
appreciate it. You can go to our website http://www.hoppyhalloween.com//
<http://www.hoppyhalloween.com/> and register online using the link close
to the bottom of the main page or contact our judging coordinator at
judging(a)hoppyhalloween.com with availability. Meals just before and/or
after sessions will be provided for volunteers, there will be door prizes,
and this year, given our numbers, we are going to do something special.
Judges that travel more than 100 miles to help us evaluate all these entries
will get $10 off their dinner if they want to stay for the Banquet. I will
need to know of any new Banquet attendees by Sunday midnight.
ALSO, we are looking at opening another session Friday afternoon starting
between 2 and 3 PM. Details are in the works for exact time but if you
would be available please let myself or our judging coordinator, Paul, know.
Thanks,
Tom

Hey fellow homebrewers!
This is a call-out to all the Minnesota Homebrew clubs to support a local homebrewer through a rough time. Chris German has a wonderful 3 year old daughter named Emma, who has recently been diagnosed with an aggressive childhood cancer called neuroblastoma. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy at Children's Hospital MPLS, and will need a stem cell transplant at the University of Minnesota in the future. Obviously this is tough to deal with, and puts a lot of stress on the family, socially and financially.
To those who know Chris and his family, they are the most relaxed and giving people you are likely to meet. Chris works for Brewer's Supply Group, selling grain and brewing ingredients to breweries and homebrew supply shops. The wonderful folks at Northern Brewer have started up a special beer kit called Emma's Ale, giving proceeds to fund research at Children's Hospital. I'm encouraging homebrewers to pick up this kit and brew it! Support Emma, support a MN homebrew shop, and support Children's cancer research. http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/emma-s-ale-extract-kit-w-specialty-gr…
Club mates of Chris at Jack Of All Brews plan to all get this kit and have a grand tasting at our January 14th meeting. We will also have a fundraising raffle and pot-luck that month. Tell us if you plan on doing anything! Check out our forum or facebook site for more info: http://www.jackofallbrews.org/forum/
Brew this kit! Also thank Northern Brewer for being so cool. To read more about Emma's battle you can visit her Caring Bridge website. Brewer's Supply Group has also set up a fund in Emma's name. Direct contributions can be made in the form of a check written to Emma German and sent to this address:

Hello, all--
Once again, Barley John's Brewpub in New Brighton has opened its patio to the MN Homebrewers Association so that we may once again brew three demo batches for those interested in homebrewing. We'll do so (once again) in conjunction with the AHA's National Teach-A-Friend-To-Homebrew Day, Saturday, November 6th. From 10:00-2:00 we'll brew some extract batches, give away brewing kits ((once again) courtesy of Midwest Supplies, Northern Brewer, and Brew & Grow).
Gather all those folks who have threatened to you that they're going to start homebrewing and bring them along so that they can see just how easy it really is, and so that they might walk away with entire starter kits! The info poster is below if you would like to copy it into a document for printing and distribution. 28-pt. (for the larger type) and 16-pt. fonts work well to fill one page. I would have just attached it, but I'm not certain that it would make it through as such.
Homebrew is most welcome at Barley John's, but please come prepared to purchase much of their terrific beer and food. And, as we always do--please tip well!
I will need at least one more brewer who will be a demo brewer. All the ingredients will be provided. The one stipulation is that you must bring the finished beer to the club's Christmas potluck for consumption.
Thanks,
John
