An update on the monthly meeting:
Saturday, September 19th from noon to 3pm.
Town Hall tour:
There will only be time for one tour of the brewery for up to 20 people.
The tour lasts about an hour and includes a "high quality gold rimmed
official tasting glass", samples during the tour (hopefully including the
special barley wine), your first pint free and 10% off following food
purchases.
The club will be paying for the tour, so, see me to sign in. Paid club
members only, please.
Other food and drink and growlers will be at your own expense. Remember to
tip the staff.
Driving and Parking:
It may be crowded. There are Gopher and Twins games that day.
Be CAREFUL where you park! If it's not a legal spot, you will probably get
a ticket and be towed.
There is a map on the Town Hall web site, but not very detailed.
http://www.townhallbrewery.com/#where-to-park
There is some street parking and there is the ramp next to the Holiday Inn.
Other Items:
Discreet tasting of homebrew is ok - but no kegs!
We will have some information on the AHA Nationals which will be at the
Bloomington Sheraton next June.
We should also have information on the October meeting which is a hot dish
competition.
Remember to bring your growlers for a refill.
See ya on the 19th!

Hello Everyone,
We are, in fact, going ahead with our grape order for 2009; thank you all
for your orders. If you have not yet placed and order or wish to add to an
existing order, the following is for you. Our grape supplier in California
informed us today that the deadline for California grape orders will be *Monday
9/14/2009*. We realize that this is very short notice but we are bound by
our suppliers deadlines. We thank you for your understanding and apologize
for the lack of warning. If you are interested in placing an order for
grapes with us, please visit
http://www.northernbrewer.com/winemaking/fresh-grapes or call us at
800-681-2739 or reserve at the retail store at 1150 Grand ave, St Paul.
Here are the varietals available:
Cabernet Sauvignon
Malbec
Merlot
Petit Syrah
Pinot Noir
Sangiovese
Old Vine Zin
The Zin and the Pinot Noir will again be $50/lug. All else will be $45. The
grapes will come in 36 lb. plastic lugs. Two lugs will yield 4-6 gallons of
must depending on varietal. Crushing will again be available at pickup,
remember to bring your own fermentation/transportation containers for your
grapes! A grape crusher, crusher/destemmer, and several wine presses are
also available for rent at the retail store. During this time of year
demand for rental equipment is high and reserving it is highly recomended.
Call the retail store at 651-223-6114 for reservations.
Sincerely NB staff

>From the upcoming issue of the BOILER.
Hopefully, there will be enough wort to go around.
Omar says 30 barrels is only about 200 carboys.
Cross your fingers!

AHA Rally at Surly Brewing Company
Saturday, October 10th, 2-5 p.m.
4811 Dusharme Dr., Brooklyn
Center
Let’s cut straight to the chase – get free Surly wort to
ferment at your home. What could be any cooler than that?
Surly Brewing Co. is hosting the regional American
Homebrewers Association rally this year at its brewery in Brooklyn
Center. And they’re doing something awesome for the
occasion. Brewer Todd Haug is brewing up a full 30-barrel batch of a special high-gravity
brew (something along the lines of an Imperial Brown) and giving it away to the
homebrewers who show up. So don’t forget to bring a sanitized fermenter. Northern
Brewer will be on site supplying free dry yeast, but homebrewers may want to
make starter and have it ready at home.
This event will probably fill up quickly, so if you’re an
AHA member, RSVP at http://www.beertown.org/email/aha/rallies/surly09.htm.
Entrance includes a Surly pint glass, a meet-and-greet with
Surly brewer Todd Haug, owner Omar Ansari, and AHA Directors Gary Glass. You’ll
also get a VIP brewery tour and a chance to win prizes from the AHA and Surly.
Omar hopes that people try to age some of their beer long
enough for homebrewers to compare the different brews (thanks to different
yeasts and dry-hops) at next year’s National Homebrew Conference here in the
Twin Cities. And feel free to bring some by the brewery anytime.
** Another treat to look forward to is Surly first wet-hop
release that will be coming out around the time of the rally. It will be on tap
during the rally. It was brewed with 1,400 lbs. of fresh hops and is sure to be
a juicy one! **
The rally is free event for AHA members. Non-members
are expected to sign up for a discounted membership at the door. Membership to
AHA includes a subscription to Zymurgy, a club discount at businesses
and AHA events… and that carboy full of Surly wort you get to take home. Come
out, enjoy the company of homebrewers from across the upper Midwest, and
enjoy the goodness that is Surly. As always, feel free to bring your own brews
to share
