Hear ye! Hear ye!
You still have two weeks to drop off your beer, cider, and mead entries for Byggvir's Big Beer Cup at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. Drop off locations are at Midwest Supplies, Northern Brewer, and Still H2O and they are accepting your entries through August 31st.
Judging will be held at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival over Labor Day Weekend (September 5th-7th). There will be pairs of hand-made drinking vessels and gift certificates given out for Best of Show, as well as First and Second Runner-Up. We have been working hard to acquire other prizes as well, including a gift certificate for the best historic beer.
It looks like we are going to easily double our entries from last year, so please sign up to help out. We welcome judges of all skill levels---even ones who have never judged before (but you do need to be at least 21 years old). The contest will be scheduled so you will have plenty of time to enjoy the the Renaissance Festival and you will get in for free the days you help out. We are also looking for stewards and people interested in talking to Fest goers about the homebrewing and the MHBA.
For more information about the contest, including a list of accepted brewing styles, entry information, and judge/steward sign-up, check out our website: www.rennfestbeercup.com.

D up. Every one (including Mr. Sillerton Jackson) was agreed that old
Catherine had never had beauty--a gift which, in the eyes of New York,
justified every success, and excused a certain number of failings.
Unkind people said that, like her Imperial namesake, she had won her way
to success by strength of will and hardness of heart, and a kind of
haughty effrontery that was somehow justified by the extreme decency and
dignity of her private life. Mr. Manson Mingott had died when she was
only twenty-eight, and had "tied up" the money with an additional
caution born of the general distrust of the Spicers; but his bold young
widow went her way fearlessly, mingled freely in foreign society,
married her daughters in heaven knew what corrupt and fashionable
circles, hobnobbed with Dukes and Ambassadors, associated familiarly
with Papists, entertained Opera singers, and was the intimate friend of
Mme. Taglioni; and all the while (as Sillerton Jackson was the first to
proclaim) there had never been a breath on her reputation; the only
respect, he always added, in which she differed from the earlier
Catherine. Mrs. Manson Mingott had long since succeeded in untying her
husband's fortune, and had lived in affluence for half a century; but
memories of her early straits had made her e
Northern Vintners,
It's that time of year again. Northern Brewer will once more be bringing in
a truckload of fresh grapes for our local customers. Our source in
California reports that it has been a slow-developing season, with the
grapes projected for a late ripening and harvest. Pricing is looking
comparable to last year; we will be offering grapes at the same rates. We
are taking pre-orders through early September, hopefully right up until our
supplier tells me they are going to ship! Get yours in at
www.northernbrewer.com/winemaking/fresh-grapes or reserve at the retail
store at 1150 Grand ave, St Paul.
The lineup this year is also going to be similar to last year, with the
addition of Pinot Noir. I think we can get our hands on some this year. The
list is:
Cabernet Sauvignon
Malbec
Merlot
Petit Syrah
Pinot Noir
Sangiovese
Old Vine Zin
The Zin and the Pinot Noir will again be $50/lug. All else will be $45. The
grapes will come in 36 lb. plastic lugs. Crushing will again be available at
pickup, remember to bring your own fermentation/transportation containers
for your grapes! Based on the information I have, I would expect to see this
shipment in the last half of September, maybe even first week of October if
it stays cool out there. The timing of this is always a bit tricky; this
year, I would simply advise you to be available throughout those periods if
you plan on ordering. The grapes will arrive when they arrive and we will
make certain to hold them across one weekend to make pickup as easy as
possible. Plan on having Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 12-4 of one weekend to
retrieve them.
As always, spread the word. The more we can put on the truck, the faster it
will get to us!
Thank you
