Announcement - Join us for the MHBA Family Picnic in August!
MHBA Family Picnic - Saturday, August 8 from 9am to 6pm. "Hilltop" picnic
shelter at Lake Rebecca Park Reserve in Rockford.
We have reserved the "Hilltop" picnic area at Lake Rebecca and have a permit
to bring in homebrew.
Hilltop has a big shelter, lots of tables and they say it holds 1,000 people
including the surrounding wooded area.
The shelter has a huge grill, electricity and there are smaller grills
nearby.
There is parking and restrooms and it's a short walk to the lake. Bring
your boat / canoe / fishing stuff / bathing suit!
There are also biking and hiking trails that go past the picnic area.
There's room for volleyball, but we need to bring or rent a net and
equipment. If someone would like to arrange that, please let me know.
Horseshoe courts are nearby but are open to the public and we also need to
bring or rent equipment.
There's plenty of open area for any other activities.
Lunch will be pot luck with the main grill lit up and available around Noon
for anyone to use.
And we have an official permit to bring in kegs, etc.! The Jockey Box will
be available.
But, we do need to have all beer out of the area by 6PM.

Just noticed that the email/web announcement for tomorrow's meeting lists only June's Style of the Month (Scottish 60/-). This month's style is Rauchbier. Yum! If you have an example, please bring it to share. (You are also welcome to bring June's style, as well as any other homebrew that you would people to try.)
See you tomorrow at Eric and Alyssa's house! -Gera

*Mark your calendar and join us as a judge or steward for the 7th Annual
Minnesota State Fair Homebrewed Beer, Mead and Cider Competition!*
Judging will take place on *Friday, evening August 21st* (sessions at 5 and
7:30 pm), AND *Saturday, August 22nd* (sessions at 8:30, 11 and 1:30), on
the State Fair grounds at the Creative Activities Annex. We need both
judges and stewards for all sessions!
What is a steward, you ask. . .Stewarding is a great way to see what happens
at a homebrew competition. The stewards assist the judges by getting beers
from the cellar, managing the paperwork and helping with any other
requests. Often the judges will pour beer for the steward and let them
taste along.
To sign up go to: http://www.mnbrewers.com/events/mnfair/
Once you get there scroll down (it is a ways down) to the section entitled
"Judging" - click the button that says "I would like to volunteer to
judge!" Clicking that will take you into the database to sign up. Once you
have registered in the database it will allow you to select specific times
you are available and whether you would like to judge or steward.
Hope you'll join us for a fun competition! Sign-up online at
www.mnbrewers.com/events/mnfair or
contact me, directly at ssstremcha(a)gmail.com with any questions.

*JULY-SEPTEMBER NORTHERN BREWER LIMITED EDITION BEER KITS*
The new Wyeast Private Collection yeast strains are scheduled for delivery
to our warehouse on July 1 or 2, and the next round of NB Limited Edition
beer kits is here as well! They're only available through September 2009,
and when they're gone they're gone!
This round is especially special for a couple reasons - there's a bonus
fourth kit this time, and two of the recipes were formulated by Mr. Denny
Conn (thanks, Denny!).
- *Petite Saison d'Ete* - with a modest gravity, bracing hoppiness, and
loads of character from the 3711 French Saison strain, this table saison is
a summer thirst-quencher
- *The Golden Dragon* - a Belgian Strong Dark ale of considerable stature
designed by NB's Heyward Gualandi and fermented with the new 3739 Flanders
Golden Ale strain - brew it now for the holidays!
- *Waldo Lake Amber* - from Denny Conn, this above-average American Amber
Ale has a wonderful malt-hop interplay and uses the 1450 Denny's Favorite 50
yeast.
- *Wry Smile Rye IPA* - available as an all-grain kit only, this highly
popular Denny Conn recipe is a souped-up American IPA brewed with rye malt
and the 1450 Denny's Favorite 50 yeast
Get 'em while they're hot at

*AMES FARM ARTISANAL HONEY - NORTHERN BREWER EXCLUSIVE*
Ames Farm of Watertown, MN produces nationally-recognized artisanal honey in
small batches with utmost attention to quality and craft. Without a
centralized area of production, Ames uses a unique "virtual apiary:" 300
hives and a network of orchards and beeyards throughout central and southern
Minnesota, combined with old-world apiary techniques almost unheard of in
North America. Now Ames Farm has teamed with Northern Brewer to make their
truly exceptional honey available to meadmakers everywhere! In keeping with
the true nature of honey as a constantly evolving, "vintage" agricultural
product, the floral sources and composition of Ames Farm honey will change
with the season and years, and are dependent on variables like hive
placement and weather - each batch of mead made with this honey will be that
much more unique, as no two batches will turn out quite the same.
Order some for National Mead Day (August 1, 2009) and check it out for
yourself at http://beta.northernbrewer.com/brewing/ames-farm-honey
*CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY PORT*
For a limited time, and by pre-order only, you can make and enjoy a
wonderfully delicious desert wine: Chocolate Raspberry Port, a multiple gold
medal winner at the 2008 and 2009 WineMaker Amateur Wine Competitions. The
pre-order deadline is August 3rd, 2009 and kits will arrive mid-September
2009.
The Chocolate Raspberry Port will come complete with everything needed to
produce 11.5 liters of liquid decadence. Contains 11.5 liters of
single-strength juice and concentrate, corn sugar, and 30 peel and stick
bottle labels.
Bursting with rich, intense flavors and aromas, this wine has a traditional
Port character of warm, rounded cherry and plum, supported by a racy zing of
bright raspberry, perfumed and gently tart, giving way to luscious liquid
chocolate - beguiling with dark, bittersweet aromas of coffee and vanilla.
Toasty hints of oak guide the way to a long, rich finish. Excellent within
three months, this wine will age gorgeously‚ if you can keep any that long!
In-store price of $94.99.

*NATIONAL HOMEBREW CONFERENCE 2009 & 2010*
Northern Brewer has been a proud sponsor of the National Homebrew Conference
and the Hospitality Suite for many years. Oakland was a blast with great
seminars and speakers, not to mention lots of great homebrew. A big
congratulations goes out to our local club the Saint Paul Home Brewers Club
for taking the Club of the Year for a third year in a row. Also former
Northern Brewer employee and SPHBC member Thomas Eibner grabbed the
Meadmaker of the Year, keeping that title in Minnesota hands for the last 4
years. Past winners were Steve Piatz, Steve Fletty, and Curt Stock.
More great news: The Twin Cities have been named as the 2010 National
Homebrew Conference location. It's being tentatively scheduled from June
17th-19th, 2010 at the Sheraton Hotel in Bloomington. Contact your local
homebrew clubs and ask how you can help and participate. Let's show the
nation what Minnesota has to offer for homebrewers and beer lovers alike.
Hey everyone,
Jeff at Flat Earth just sent me an email. They have 40 cases of 22 oz bottles that they need to get rid of. Each case has 12 mostly label-free bottles. $2/case. Send Jeff an email to set up time/day at: brewer(a)flatearthbrewing.com
P.S. Goes without saying that this is an excellent deal, so don't hassle him/other brewers about finding the perfect/label-free bottles for your case. Bring cash.

Want to see if you can smell malt through the wafting aroma of turkey legs? We welcome judges of all skill levels---even ones who have never judged before (but you do need to be at least 21 years old). The contest will be scheduled so you will have plenty of time to enjoy the all that the Middle Ages has to offer. Want more incentive?
