Club Meeting – Saturday, March 14, 2009 noon-3pm
Sixth Annual Chili Cook-Off and Swap Meet
CSPS Hall, 383 Michigan St., St. Paul
Once again, it is time for our annual Chili Cook-Off!
There are three categories in which you can enter:
Red Chili – meat, but NO beans
Chili with Beans – not really chili, but we're here to have fun!
Open – green, vegetarian, white, whatever
Like last year, we'll have everyone vote for their favorite for each category and then have everyone vote for their favorite overall. The winner of each category gets a prize and the overall winner gets a prize and the honor of bringing home the Chief Chili Pepper trophy! Chief Chili Pepper is hurting right now, but I'll try to patch him up before the meeting.
You can help out by bringing your chili ready to eat in crock pots and bringing along extension cords and serving utensils. Bowls, spoons, and napkins will be provided.
The March meeting also features a swap meet. There are people that may want items you no longer need. You may find items yourself that will help upgrade your brewing operation. Bring stuff; take stuff.
Mike Moranz will also be speaking a little bit on peppers and their use in beer and mead.
Of course we welcome all the home brew you would like to bring to the meeting, especially beers that go well with chili. We even like mead and ciders.
For you facebook folks, take a look at the MhBA group (http://tinyurl.com/aeyrhn) and the Chili Cook-Off event (http://tinyurl.com/aldcfl)

Two Brothers Red Eye. Coffee Porter
"Red Eye Porter is a marriage of two of our favorite things: big beers and dark roast coffee. Red Eye starts with a 9.3% ABV Imperial Baltic porter recipe that can easily stand on its own. Then we loaded it up with 100% organic, fair trade coffee beans that were roasted about 3 miles from the brewery. The dark roast coffee beans were still warm from the roasting process when they were added to the beer. The result is a wonderfully rich chocolate and coffee aroma, with nice coffee and black malt flavor, and a soft clean finish. EYES OPEN!"
Red Eye.
Red Eye is at the Firkins now.
Tyranena Brewers Gone Wild. "Paradise by the dashboard lights" - Cherry Porter.
"Paradise By The Dash Board Lights is our "base" Imperial Porter with the addition of tart red cherry puree. It is a bit of a balancing act... getting just enough cherry into the beer that the flavor comes
through... but no so much that you do not taste the imperial porter. I think we balanced it just right... the tartness and cherry flavor come through early... and then the roastiness of the dark malts finish off the taste. Come on down and judge for yourself!"

We have lots of this so come and try some!

Flat Earth Winter Warlock.
And of course, more beer.
02/21/2009
Flat Earth Winter Warlock English Style Golden Barley Wine.
Winter warlock was made in the tradition of some of England's great barleywine ales. The beer is made with delicious base malt and sugar. We boiled for over two hours to help caramelize some of the sugars. The final product is as smooth as freshly resurfaced ice with a subtle hop character. This beer pairs nicely with calamari, ham and quail. Enjoy this beer with someone special on a cold winter's night,
a roaring fire and time to reflect on how each beer is as unique as a snowflake.Made with English malt, sugar, Fuggle hops, Irish ale yeast and St. Paul water.

Schell Maifest German Style Maibock.
Considered by the locals as the birthplace of the Bock beer style, the Hofbrauhaus brews different versions of Bock beer at several points during the year. Most important of these is their Maibock or
Maifest beer. The Prime Minister of Bavaria and the Mayor of Munich are quite likely to take part in the tapping of the first huge barrel of Maibock each year, as they celebrate the end of winter and the promise of warmer weather.
Maifest has a very large hop aroma, is smooth to the palate, and a unique malty sweetness than our other varieties. In celebration of the spirit of the Hofbrauhaus and the Maibock style, we proudly offer August Schell's Maifest beer.

The Heavy Table New Online magazine about good food, beer and everything local.
Heavy Table
The Heavy Table is a Twin Cities-based magazine passionately telling the stories of food and drink - from roots to table - in the Upper Midwest.
We are interested in small, neighborhood restaurants; ethnic eateries with a story to tell; great home cooking; Upper Midwestern culinary traditions; stuff that's hilarious; recipes that work; recipes that fail spectacularly; current events; local food; heirloom food; and people at all levels of the food creation, preparation, distribution and consumption chain.
The Heavy Table is for readers who enjoy good food. That might mean a $75 tab at La Belle Vie or a $5 porketta sandwich bought on the road to Hibbing. It might be a dandelion salad or a venison stew. It might be a new variety of Bisquick pancakes.
We read Saveur, and MFK Fisher, and The Art of Eating, and Brillat-Savarin. We also watch Andrew Zimmern and Anthony Bourdain and keep tabs on the local food blogs. We write to be understood, to be accurate, and to entertain.
The Heavy Table is a positive voice with integrity. We will call people out on lousy value and bad hospitality. But we prefer to celebrate the delicious, the creative, the honest, and the heartwarming.
We look forward to serving you.
These guys really know what they are doing! Check it out at The Heavy Table.
