Battle of the beers II: A Bitter Brawl - Pale Ales, IPA's and Double IPA's
Monday September 22nd 6:30pm
Come duke it out with Micheal Agnew and some bloody hoppy beers!
Hops! Humulus lupulus. The bitter and spice of beer. First mentioned for
brewing in 1079, once banned in England as a "wicked and pernicious weed",
hops only slowly triumphed over the herbal mixtures called gruit once used
to bitter beer. From the toffee and floral character of the English pub
bitter to the quintessential expression of American craft brewing, the
over-the-top hop monster Double IPA, no style showcases the Alpha and Beta
of hops better than Pale Ale. For your consideration; the balanced
simplicity of the English Pale and its boldly bitter American cousin, the
bigger and badder English or American India Pale Ale, and the uniquely
American Double IPA testing the limits of the human palate's ability to
perceive bitterness.
The lines have been drawn for an epic battle of the beers. Five bitter
styles and six bitter beers; which will emerge victorious from the crucible
of Firkin Forum? You will be the judge. Let the Bitter Brawl begin!
Only 35 spaces so email alvey@thefourfirkins as soon as you can to sign up.
The event is free! Include the phrase "Bitter Brawl" in your email subject
line. Hope to see you then!
Brau Brothers Tasting.
Monday September 15th 6:00pm
Megan from Brau Brothers will be here at 6:00pm this coming Monday night to
share samples with us. Brau Brothers is a very new, very small, micro
brewery in Lucan Minnesota that is pumping out some great craft beer. If
you've never tried it you should! Now you have no excuse - it'll be at the
Firkins and it will be free!
Come support your peeps! Minnesotan craft beer. Oh yeah....

Rogue Double Dead Guy in sock now!
Twice the death!
Double Dead Guy is a new reincarnation of Rogue's classic Dead Guy Ale.
Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of
toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the
maltiness in check. D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15.
Hops. Cascade for boil and Crystal for aroma. IBU's approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato
Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

Full Sail - Old Boardhead Barley Wine Ale
It's barley wine season!
The 2007 Reserve is here! At 9% ABV this is a great way to warm up after a
day driving around looking at fall colours, which will be here any day
now...

Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence.
Chocolate and beer, the two best things ever.
Imagine intense Belgian dark chocolate gliding across the tongue; starting
sweet up front but giving way to rich cocoa flavors at the back. Through it
all, a subtle fruitiness from the special Belgian yeast gives the beer
brightness otherwise foreign to a beer style normally associated with gray
foggy skies.
In other words, it's bloody good!

Tomorrow (Saturday, Sept 6th) is the Shakopee Brewery Tour from 10-12.
Please dress sensibly - long pants and closed toe shoes if you want to crawl
around the old building.
And bring a bottle as a gift for the owner.
And remember to bring something for the pot luck.

In case you haven't seen the results from Byggvir's Big Beer Cup that was judged at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival this past weekend: www.rennfestbeercup.com/2008-winners
We had a little over 100 entries, including 7 historic entries. Congratulations to Jonathan Crist for winning "Best Historic".
Best of Show was Daniel Wolf's Kolsch. (Daniel sent his entries from Virginia!)
First Runner-up was Chris Smith's Weizen/Weissbier.
Second Runner-up was William Schmiedlin from Jack of All Brews with a group brewed Extra Special/Strong Bitter.
Thanks to the Best of Show judges: Kris England, Mike Miziorko, and Joel Stitzel.
We had over 45 people helping out with the contest on site at the Fest over this holiday weekend. I appreciate everyone's help. Thank you.
I want to also thank Eric Swann, Mark and Kami Johnson, Joel Stitzel, and Jonathan Crist for getting up on stage and giving brewing demonstrations. We had two demos a day over the three-day weekend!
I also want to thank Midwest Supplies for the generous donation of ingredients for the demonstrations and also for the $50 prize for BOS. Big thanks also to Northern Brewer and Still H2O for their donations of gift certificates. We appreciate the support!
Most importantly, I want to thank Deb at the Renaissance Festival for allowing us this opportunity.
I hope many of you will consider helping out and entering Byggvir's next year.

A reminder for this Saturday's club meeting.
10am to Noon At Shakopee Brewery:
Long pants may be a good idea for the tour as well as some flashlights. We
may be going underground and there are stinging nettles in the area. Also
may be some mosquitoes, so bring some spray/lotion. You can change to
shorts afterwards depending on the weather.
Shakopee Brewery is located at 11086 Chaparral Ave., Shakopee, MN 55379.
>From downtown Shakopee take County 69 west, called 1st Ave. in downtown
Shakopee. Go past Rahr Malting. At the top of hill west of Shakopee you'll
see the Town Square shopping mall and theatre, turn right onto Chaparral. Go
to RR tracks, hang a left, you're there! You may need to park near the
tracks and walk a short bit. Look for my red Outback or we may have some
signs posted, if we remember.
Bring some homebrew to share with Trenk and to thank him for his
hospitality.
Following the tour, we'll meet for a pot luck lunch at Dave Luskey's at 1pm.
Dave's address is 150 West 170th Street, Shakopee, MN 55379. To get there
from Shakopee Brewery take 69 south to the stop lights at 169. Take a left
and go north on 169 one mile. Take the Marystown Road exit. Turn left
(south) on Marystown Road. Go 4.9 miles through Marystown and keep driving
until you come to County Rd. 70 or 170th street - they are one in the same.
Take a left and drive until you arrive at the first house on your left.
Approx. 1 mile. It's pot luck, so bring a dish to share and, of course
beverages.
There will be smoked brisket at the potluck, so plan accordingly.
Gera - remember the hard hats!
Folding chairs would also be a good idea.
