THE FIRST EVER BJCP MEAD CERTIFICATION EXAM

$30 for BJCP Judges, $50 for new examinees
The Beer Judge Certification Program will be debuting their new
certification "BJCP CERTIFIED MEAD JUDGE" in St.Paul, MN on Sunday, August
3 at 9am. The BJCP Mead Judge exam is a 2hr 45 minute exam consisting of a
2hr 8-question essay exam and a 45min 3-mead tasting section. Details

The test will be administered by Gordon Strong, BJCP President and
Grandmaster V beer judge. This will be the FIRST BJCP Mead Exam given by
the BJCP, and culminates a two-year development process. It is a Pass/Fail
test, requiring a 60% grade to pass. Current BJCP judges who pass the exam
will receive a "Mead Judge Endorsement" on their record. New judges will
be considered a "BJCP Mead Judge" in the program. Both will receive a BJCP
Certified Mead Judge pin upon passing.

Following the Mead exam and after a break for lunch, BJCP President Gordon
Strong and BJCP Continuing Education Director Kris England will present a
Mead Judging seminar. Commercial and home-made meads will be open-tasted,
followed by discussion on each mead. The topic will be Mead-JUDGING, as
compared to Mead-MAKING, mead-judging vocabulary, common flaws, and
troubleshooting will be covered.
You NEED NOT be a BJCP judge to participate in this event! This is open to
any and all who are interested in learning about mead tasting. Significant
others are welcome and encouraged.

1) If you taste meads for two hours and THEN took the test, you'd be MESSED

The kick-off for the Twin Cities NATIONAL MEAD WEEKEND will be the Mead
Dinner at the Happy Gnome on Thursday, July 31 at 6pm.
Happy Gnome Executive Chef Matthew Hinman will prepare and serve a
six-course feast paired with SEVEN meads from White Winter Winery,
featuring fish, wild game, and local seasonal fare. A "meet and greet"
will start promptly at 6pm with a selected White Winter mead.
* Ken Schramm, author of "The Compleat Meadmaker" will be on hand to talk
about mead tasting.
* Jon Hamilton, meadmaker at White Winter Winery of Iron River, Wisconsin
will be present to talk about each of his meads.
* Chef Matt hopefully can be coaxed to speak about his choices in creating
the pairings.

The competition will be judged Friday 1 August 2008 at the CSPS hall
starting at around 5:30 pm. Please help us select the best of the best
from the AHA clubs around the country.

St. Paul Homebrewers Club and Minnesota Homebrewers Association are happy to announce the 6th Annual Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Beer, Mead and Cider Competition.The First and Second round of judging will be on Friday, August 15th, 4pm to 10pm AND Saturday, August 16th, 9am to 6pm, on the State Fair grounds at the Creative Annex. On-line registration is from July 16th to August 8th. The entry fee is a very reasonable $5 and we only ask for 2 bottles per entry! You can drop off your entries at Midwest Homebrew, Northern Brewer and Still- H20. Mail-in entries can be sent to Midwest. Winners in categories will receive the State Fair medals. Thanks agian, this year, Midwest Homebrew Supplies generously sponsored BOS prizes: First Place prize: $100 gift certificate and BOS rosette, Second Place prize: $75 gift certificate, Third Place prize: $50 gift certificate.
The Best of Show judging will be done during the Minnesota State Fair, on Saturday, August 23th from 11am to 2pm at the Education Building’s outdoor stage. The Pedalpub will be in the MSF Parade, too. Volunteers are always in short supply for the first round judging so even if you only make it for part of the event we still can use you. We’re looking for volunteers for Judge Coordinator, Steward Coordinator and Cellarmaster. Also, we will be needing volunteers for various media and BOS events.

The first Beer Evangelist class was a huge success! The Firkins was packed
with eager participants and I'm sure everyone who was there will agree Josh
Pepper is a great instructor. His enthusiasm for the subject and his ability
spread that passion is second to none. The second class is set for the 25th
of this month, it is unfortunately already sold out. I will announce the
date of the August class in the next newsletter as well as on the website.
To the lucky 35 people who got in, I look forward to sharing some Saisons
with you!
