Steve told me that his goal was to push the Brew-Ha-Ha up over 500 entries this year, so everybody throw the kitchen sink at them!

Hey gang,
Just wanted to let you know the Northern Ale Star's 2009 Great Northern Brew-Ha-Ha will be February 6th & 7th. So while you're bottling up your beers for the Upper Mississippi Mash-out why not bottle two more to enter in the Brew-Ha-Ha!
- FREE SHIPPING! - Bring your entries to the Mashout and we'll transport them back to Duluth.
- Best of show Beer will brew their winning entry at the Thirsty Pagan Brewery AND it will be the Pagan's featured beer (2008 BOS winner Steve Piatz brewed his Belgian Triple at the Pagan this year).
- $5.00 entry fee (cheap!)
- The Brew-Ha-Ha is the 2nd stop on the Midwest Homebrewer of the Year circuit.Continue the momentum you build at the Mash-out to propell yourself to greatness!
- Special category - "Snowblower Beer" - Enter a beer you would like to enjoy after a hard day of snow blowing (sounds like I'm going to need one after this weekend in Duluth).
You can enter and register to judge at http://www.northernalestars.org/greatnorthernbrewhaha.html beginning January 12, 2009. We will (of course) be in need of judges and stewards so be sure to reserve February 6 - 7, 2009!!
Cheers!

Hello fellow CBS'ers David Cords here. My Brother in law and I will be in
the city on Dec 19-21. Just wondering if you all can recommend some good
places for us to go. We were originally planning on going to the closing of
the Clayborn Goose. Glad that its not now closing. Anyway I already have
us going to GI, Delilahs, Map Room, etc. Is there any other good places for
reasonable priced beer/food for that weekend? Also is there any good beer
stores that will be open Sunday out of the city (I hate paying the city
income tax!) going back to Michigan? Thanks for all your input. David

HopLeaf would be a good choice for Belgian beers and food (they do carry other craft brews from America and the world). Also the Rock Bottom downtown is always good.
Sam's Wine & Spirits should be open on Sunday, as should Binny's - South Loop (which has 10 taps of excellent beers). Unfortunately both are in the city. You can check Binny's website for locations in the southern suburbs. I know there is one in Orland Park, but that may be out of your way. DiCarlos in Mundelein is an excellent choice but they are far north suburbs.
On the way back to (or from) Michigan, you do have Flossmoor Station Brewpub and Three Floyds Brewpub.

Rock Bottom has a special Sunday football-watchers menu that is very
reasonably priced, and their beer at all locations is clearly worth a
visit too. Especially Downtown, but also at their other Chicago area
locations too.
The highest local tax is the Cook County tax. Going back to Michigan, I
don't know where you're going to find anything that's outside of Cook
County. For instance, Binny's Orland is still in Cook. DuPage County is
way out of your way - even at less than $2/gallon, you'll still spend
more on gas than you'll save on tax. (I'd recommend a store in DuPage
only if you were headed west.) So you might as well just go to Sam's or
Binny's in the city. The Binny's at I-90/94 @ Roosevelt, and the Sam's
across from Goose Island, are both "destination" stores the likes of
which you will not find elsewhere. Also don't ignore West Lakeview
Liquors at 2156 W Addison.
If you're shopping for price, the low prices at the Foremost at 2041 N
Ashland (known locally as "Mr. Lee's") more than offset the higher
taxes, so you might try there first and fill in what else you want
elsewhere. Their craft beer selection is very good, but not as deep as
Sam's and Binny's. (It's in the strip mall behind Dunkin Donuts at that
address.)

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed.
Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery
and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they
might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to
myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come
true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

Here are a couple of my local favorites to grab a beer and a meal:
Handlebar (2311 W. North Ave). It's a nice escape from your typical
gastro-pub fare, mostly vegetarian (some fish dishes), and all
delicious. They always have great beers on tap and in bottles---seems
like they switch it up weekly. It's a nice change of scenery from
your average beer bar.
Jerry's Sandwiches (1938 W Division St). An enormous beer
list---easily over a hundred different bottles---all american craft
brews. And there are something like 200 sandwiches on the menu.

Kuma's Corner, 2900 W. Belmont (http://www.kumas-corner.com) is a favorite of
mine. Good beer selection, great burgers, and all burgers are $10. I recommend
you get there as close to opening time as you can as it'll get crowded fast.

I'll second the Kuma's Corner recommendation. Fantastic burgers, wide beer selection, and a mean mac and cheese.
The heavy metal music and close quarters can get loud, and ever since
they were "Check Pleased" it's been harder to get in the place without
a 45 minute wait, so definitely try to go off-peak.

Beer to share: Bring any beer, mead or cider you wish to share. There will
be a "Peoples Choice" award given for the best beer, mead or cider.
Bottles, growlers or keg are welcome. The style of the month for December

November's SOTM. Don't forget a small tasting glass, some plastic glasses
will be available in case of emergency.
Beer to exchange: Bring up to 24 bottles to exchange with your fellow
homebrewers. Label each bottle with your name, email address, style and
beer name (if it has one). Everyone who participated draws a number and
then selects a bottle in order until they receive as many bottles as they
brought.
Family and Friends: This is a family friendly event, so bring your
significant other, kids, and any friends/family that have ever expressed an
interest in homebrewing or beer. Just to be clear you or your guest don't
have to be a club member to attend(a few people were wondering).
Since this is one of the most attended gatherings of the year, it's a great
opportunity to get out and meet your fellow homebrewers. If you have not
made it to a meeting , the Holiday potluck is a perfect chance to try some
great homebrew, delicious food and exchange homebrew with others.
If you have not renewed you membership or would like to sign-up for a club
membership, our member director should be on hand to collect your money and
hand out your new membership cards. Which for those who don't are good for
a 10% discount at the local homebrew shops(Northern Brewer, Midwest Supply,
Brew & Grow, & Still-H2O)
Additionally, the beers brewed during last month's "teach a friend to
homebrew" will be available for all to try.
We are still looking for a few more prizes for the raffle, If anyone has a

Hi there,
If anyone remembers WindRiver Brewing that was me, it is a little disappointing that none of the homebrewers I have run across seem to have ever heard of it. Oh well.
Anyway, a guy at work got me 10 lbs of honey from his dad in Mankato who is a bee keeper. I was thinking about doing like a 1/2 batch to make a sweet mead. Any recommendations on yeast? Also, I was considering doing either a cold mead, or someone told me that you can bring water to a boil add Irish Moss and boil that for 10 minutes, then shut off the heat and add the honey to the hot water. Also, is Mead like beer in that it needs to be chilled very quickly for clarity and other reasons?
Sorry for all the questions :)
Cheers,
Will H
