The Four Firkins
New Flat Earth Beers and Aeppel Treow Ciders!
Happy holidays!
12/25/2008
Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and Happy Kwanzaa!
And of course Festivus for the rest of us!
Whether you're a traditionalist or your are just along for the ride, alcoholic beverages seem to make this time of year just a little bit easier don't they? (especially is you are starting your Festivus celebration with the "Airing of Grievances" )
I tend to favour the fermented variety. Here's a few new ones that might help Auntie Bunnie ( Who smokes three packs a day and sounds more like uncle Patrick ) just a little easier on the ears.
Flat Earth Brewing - St. Paul Minnesota! Black Helicopter and Rode Haring Flanders Red.
Flat Earth Brewing in St Paul Minnesota has bottled two of their latest batches both of which are at The Firkins right now. Unlike previous bottles from Flat Earth these ones are big old 750mls.
The first one has been around before, some of you may have tried it the first time. Black Helicopter Coffee Stout is brewed with Dunn Bros coffee, roasted barley, flaked oats and St. Paul water. It is black as the nights sky and highly caffeinated. Jeff only filled 500 bottles of this brew so needless to say supply is limited.
Black Helicopter
The Second Flat Earth to recently hit our fridge is the Rode Haring Flanders Red Ale. This is very special, it marks the first time to my knowledge that a Minnesotan Commercial Brewery has brewed this style. It's a very old Belgian style that is aged for up to two years, often in huge oaken barrels which contain the resident bacteria necessary to sour the beer.
If you've never tried a Belgian Style sour beer before this is a great example of how wonderful they can be. Nice job Jeff!
Rode Haring
Aeppel Treow Winery - Wisconsin. Real Ciders from Real Talented people!
Aeppel Treow ( means "Apple True"in crazy old English ) is a Winery that specializes in
Wisconsin Grown and Produced Artisan [Hard] Cider. We are one of the first retailers in Minnesota to get our hands on them and currently have a Perry ( Pear Cider ) two Sparkling Apple ciders and a Honey Apple Wine in stock with more varieties to come.
Why not welcome the new year with a bottle of these bubblies?
Black Helicopter
DeuS Brut De Flanders The ultimate New Years Eve Beer.
DeuS undergoes a lengthy, costly maturation in the Champagne caves of France. The elegant and labor-intensive "methode Champenoise" produces the best sparkling beverages in the world. The yeast is frozen in the neck and removed just like Champagne and then every 12th bottle is sacrificed to top up the previous eleven.
DeuS has characteristics of both sparkling wine (fine, velvety carbonation) and specialty beer (rich maltiness) but also exhibits a fragrant, herbal and spicy character quite unique and special. Flavors of anise, mint, malt, lavender, and a barely perceptible hoppiness make DeuS a very special treat.

I'm still looking for a few volunteers to provide some kegs of homebrew for
the 2009 Upper Mississippi Mash Out on the weekend of January 23-24. While
the banquet will have a German theme and we will have a number of homebrewed
German lager styles already lagering away for the event we are also look for
other styles both for the banquet and during the judging.
For providing a keg you will receive one of the custom UMMO 2009 tap handles
create by Don Stock just for this event. There is also the possibility of
winning the people's choice award with your beer, the people's choice award
winner gets a bigger tap handle. New for this year we will have two
people's choice awards. One will be for a beer served during the judging
sessions and the other will be for a beer server during the banquet. Also
new for this year will be how you vote for your choice. You will vote with
money, the beer the at collects the most money will win the award and all
the money will be donated to the food shelf.
We can also get you a discount on ingredients and even a loaner keg to put
the beer in so you don't have to worry about getting your keg back after the
event.
If you are interested in providing a hospitality beer please let me know
what style you will be providing. There are a limited number of the special
tap handles available, be the first in your neighborhood to get one.
