NOTE: This is a week later than in the MhBA calendar. This is a GREAT
contest, and not so huge as the Mash-Out.

The AHA publishes a "recommended" Big-Brew day recipe, but it's not required
to use it. It's not posted yet for 2007, but last year's recipe can be
found at: http://www.beertown.org/events/bigbrew/recipes.html .
Speaking of which, I am the AHA "Evang-Ale-ist" for the MhBA. What does
that mean? If anyone wants to sign up for the AHA or renew their
membership, I can get you 10% off. See me at the club meeting/Chili Contest
on March 10 if you're interested.

Scott,
Many folks have won many contests using extracts and kits.
We will be having a little all grain get-together this May-5 and welcome
your attendance. We are planning to brew about 80 gallons of bitter wort to
share with the unsuspecting and uninitiated. The systems are fairly large
but the concept is simple. Can't tell you the style at this time.
Suggestions? This is on the Minneapolis side of the river with the chalky
water. We just can't help it.

Subject: Best way to get into all grain brewing?
I'd really like to get into all grain brewing but am unsure what the best
method would be to do that. It seems there are different methods of brewing
all grain? I see that Northern Brewer sells two different kits one being
the regular and the other being the deluxe. The deluxe seems like it would
be more easy to use than the regular. Maybe there are other options such as
making my own kit? With all this talk of submitting beers for contest I'd
like to get away from extracts so I can start fine tuning my skills and
hopefully someday be able to submit my own.
Does anyone have any good online or in print resources or advice for a
brewer looking to make the jump?
Thanks all,
Scott

This is a test of the Beermergency Broadcast system. If this was a real
Beermergency, you would have been instructed to find a full beer and seek
subsequent shelter.
Ok, just messing around again. What does the club collective think about
beer night at Denver? Has anybody responded with a yes or no? It's my first
convention. If you have a hospitality suite, can you visit others?

Al,
I think I sent up information about the Big Batch Brew Bash.
We had a change in the mailing address for the KGB Big Batch Brew Bash.
One of the shop's owner passed away, so here is the updated flyer.
The change is the removal of the Brew Stop. Please mail entries to the new
address on the flyer.
Cheers,
Ed Moore
PS There may be more Texans coming up next year.
Seems I left the water pitchers we use for competitions at the
Brew-Ha-Ha in Duluth. If anyone is heading North, or anyone from Duluth
is heading South, please let me or Steve Daiken know so we can arrange
pickup and delivery.
Thanks!

Subject: I WON!!!
Hey Everybody,
I just wanted to share the joy with everyone that I won my very first
contest!
http://www.northernalestars.org/greatnorthernbrewhaha.html . I won 1st
place with my Stout!
This is only the second contest I ever entered and I am super amazed
that I won. My American Brown also scored really high on the charts
(actually had a higher score than my stout). Either way, it is great to
know that my biased friends are not the only ones who think my beer is good.
I owe a bunch of this victory to the folks on this forum whose earnest
advice has served me better and better each and every time I brew! For
someone who has been brewing for just over a year and a half, I have
gone from simple extract beers to all grain contest winners.
Thanks Techtalk and thanks to the Northern Ale Stars for my very first
medal!!!!! It will look great in my new Brooklyn Apartment!
Jorge
Harrison, NJ
PS. I will enter these beers into more contests soon so some lucky judge
out there can be lucky enough to try it!

Subject: Drunk Monk Challenge -- Call for Judges
Fellow beer judges,
It's that time of year again -- time for the Urban Knaves of Grain Drunk
Monk Challenge! The competition will take place on Friday and Saturday,
March 9 and 10. The main competition (Saturday) will be held in Aurora
IL, at America's Brewpub (located in Walter Payton's Roundhouse Complex).
The DMC is AHA sanctioned, a qualifying event for the MCAB (Master
Championship of Amateur Brewing), and a leg of Midwest Homebrewer of the
Year. We are one of the largest competitions in the Midwest, typically
receiving over 400 entries.
For more information (including how to enter), please visit:
http://knaves.org/DMC
There will also be a judge's/volunteer's party Friday evening, and a
raffle on Saturday afternoon after the PM judging session. For judges
attending Saturday's sessions, breakfast and lunch will be served;
judges also receive a complimentary DMC 2007 commemorative tasting glass!
If you are interested in judging at the DMC, please contact me (Mike
Uchima, uchima(a)pobox.com, or 630-416-9518). We need judges for both the
Friday evening (mead and cider) session, as well as the Saturday (beer)
judging sessions. Please let me know which session(s) you are interested
in judging, your experience level, style(s) you are entering in the
competition (if any), and perferences regarding styles you want (or
don't want) to judge.
Hope to see you there!
Also please feel free to forward this to anyone else who may be
qualified to judge at this competition, but might not have received this
e-mail. (E.g. experienced judges who are not in the BJCP, pro brewer,
etc...)
