Just when you though the days could not get any shorter comes hope. The end
of short days will be celebrated and Winter Solstice will be observed at
Bryn Jacobson's pad (631 E 8th St. Duluth) on Thursday 21 Dec beginning
around sunset-ish. We should have several different homebrews (Stout,
Rauchbier and Spiced Ale) to serve and other varied treats to enjoy.
AND....the always traditional Irish Car Bomb! Bring a snack to share and
some homebrew or most excellent ale to drink.
Start Brewing:
Now is the time to start brewing your entries for the Great Northern
Brew-Ha-Ha. Entries will be accepted January 8th to the 26th. You can get
more info on the Northern Ale Stars web site at
http://www.northernalestars.org/greatnorthernbrewhaha.html.
Here is a great reason to enter: The beer which is determined to be the best
entry of the competition will be awarded the honor of Best of Show and the
winning brewer will get to brew their entry along side brewer Rich Sauer at
The Thirsty Pagan Brewing (formerly Twin Ports Brewing). AND the beer will
be featured and served at TPB (Sorry, you don't get a cut in the action)
Also, the Great Northern Brew-Ha-Ha will be a part of the Midwest Homebrewer
of the Year circuit and you will earn points toward that award!
January Meeting:
The January meeting will be at Dubh Linn Pub, 109 W. Superior St. in Duluth.
The usual 2:00 PM-ish starting time applies. More info will be in the
January e-mail, bur keep the date open.
Upper Mississippi Mash-Out
The Mash-Out is the opening event in the High Plains Brewer of the Year
Award 2007, the Midwest Brewer of the Year Award 2007 and the MCAB 2008.
This event is put on by our friends at the Minnesota Homebrewers and the St.
Paul Homebrewers Club. They will be assisting us with the Brew-Ha-Ha so
let's all support them with entries and, if you can, going down to the event
to volunteer. It's a GREAT event with lots of homebrewers from around the
midwest which makes it a fantastic social event for anyone who enjoys
homebrewing. http://www.mnbrewers.com/mashout
Key Dates:
Jan. 1-13, entries accepted
Jan. 26-27, judging at the Klub Haus in St. Paul Jan. 27, "Jamaica in
January" themed beer banquet and awards ceremony
Judge!
Outsiders are very welcome. Judges and volunteers are pampered with an
in-door "Pub Crawl," a Brewpub Brewers Forum, commemorative pint glasses and
the opportunity to pre-order growlers from regional brewpubs. It's a lot of
fun, and you can sign up now.
Banquet in the islands
Chef Manfred Krug is going tropical with an island-themed menu this year.
"Let's get together and feel all right" at the "Jamaica in January" banquet
on Jan. 27. The cost is $30, and you can sign up now. The complete menu
will be posted in the near future.
STEEELLAAAA!!!!!
Anheuser-Busch and InBev, the world's two largest brewing companies, have
struck a deal (God help us all) where A-B will become the exclusive U.S.
importer of a number
of InBev's premium European import brands, including Stella Artois, Beck's,
Bass Ale, Hoegaarden, Leffe and other select InBev brands. Effective Feb. 1,
Anheuser-Busch will import these premium brands and be responsible for their
sales, promotion and distribution in the United States. These InBev brands,
which had sales volumes of about 1.5 million barrels in 2005, will be
available to Anheuser-Busch's U.S. wholesaler network where possible.
According to Beer Marketer's Insights the big prize is the fast-growing
Stella Artois brand, which could reach 500,000 barrels sales in the U.S.
this
year compared to 300,000 in 2005.
Cheers and Happy Holidays!
Remember, Pubs are not just for Christmas.

The Upper Mississippi Mash-Out '07 (UMMO) needs volunteers to supply
beer, mead or cider for competition next month.
We need:
-calibration beer
-beer to serve in the lounge area
-beer for the banquet
Email me, your UMMO '07 Keg Wrangler, if you can brew up a beer for the
banquet or bring a keg you have on hand to share.
The UMMO is one of the larger regional homebrew competitions, attracting
people and entries from around the region and the country. Here's your
chance to impress them with you kick ass keg.
If you'd like to supply a keg to be used as calibration beer, you can
get the score sheets back for that if that interests you.

As you are well aware, the MHBA's BIG HOLIDAY EVENT is this Friday, 6-10, in
the CSPS Hall above the Glockenspiel in Saint Paul.
Please bring a potluck dish (and recipe, if you want to win the People's
Choice award for food item-there's prizes!). Bringing your own table
service isn't a bad idea, but plastic plates, etc. will be available.
Bring beer! Bring labeled homebrew for the Beer Exchange. Bring beer for
public consumption and perhaps win the People's Choice award. (prizes!)
Bring families. This is a great event to share with the significant other
and the wee ones.
Bring money! Paul Dienhart, the first-ever membership secretary, will be on
hand to take your 2007 renewals. Remember-every renewing membership expires
12/31/06, so bring $15 to cover your 2007 dues. 2007 membership cards will
be available. Members in good standing are eligible to use the new club
library, administered by Joe Gerteis. He has tons of cool books and a
counter-pressure filler available for check-out. Chris Smith is using the
new filler for a club bottle-filling event before Upper Mississippi
Mash-Out.
Bring your inquisitive nature. At Teach a Friend Day, three
nearly-identical brews were made. Your mission (should you choose to accept
it) is to attempt to figure out which brew had the extract added at which
point. One had extract added for the full 60 minutes of the boil, one had
extract added 30 minutes in, and the third had extract added at flame-out.
Bring yourself to the CSPS Hall Friday night (the 8th) at 6:00! See you
there.

The December issue of THE BOILER, the newsletter of the Minnesota Home
Brewers Association, is now online. Download your copy NOW at:

Don't forget - this Friday, December 8th at 6pm at the CSPS Hall in St.
Paul is the December meeting and Christmas Party! Bring your family,
bring a dish to share, bring some beer to share, and bring some beers (up
to 24) to swap in the Christmas beer exchange! People's Choice awards
will be given for both A) dishes made with beer, and B) Beer! (Bring
copies of your recipe for the food, and label your beer with the style and
your name.)
It will be held at the CSPS Hall on West 7th St in St. Paul, above the
Glockenspiel. See you there!

Good for Jeff! He is also a graduate of the Spring 2005 BJCP class -
which he passed with a NATIONAL score, BTW.
Does anyone know if Jeff is also the OWNER, or just the head brewer?

Jeff also used to work at Northern Brewer before he started working at
Town
Hall. If you haven't met him, he's a really nice guy. I wish him all the
best of luck with his endeavour.
I was talking with him about the brewery a couple weeks ago and have a
little info. They will have a tasting room for brewery tours, but it's not
going to be a brew pub. He said they'd be brewing to sell to bars and
possibly liquor stores to start with.

Winterfest Tickets on Sale this Friday (Dec. 1st) at noon.
Tickets are limited and will sell out fast
The Details: The Minnesota Craft Brewer's Guild is Pleased to Present the
Sixth Annual Winterfest <http://www.mncraftbrew.org/page5.html> . This
year's Winterfest will be on January 19th from 6:30-9:30p at the Landmark
<http://www.landmarkcenter.org/> Center in downtown St. Paul. Tickets go on
sale tommorow at noon and they are limited to 400. The cost is $42.50 and
are available only through online sale - they will not be available at any
