The 2007 Upper Mississippi Mashout is almost here! I know many of you are
already planning to enter and attend, many others may not have experience
with competitions yet. I'm writing to encourage everyone to sign up to
judge and steward at the competition.
Especially STEWARD! This is a great way to help out at the competition,
even if you've never been involved before. We'll have training on-site.
It's also a great way to take a break from the exhaustion of judging, even
if you're an experienced judge. Stewards make the competition work --
simple as that.
Sign up to judge and STEWARD at http://www.mnbrewers.com/mashout/. The
competition is January 26th and 27th at The Klub Haus in St. Paul MN. You
can sign up for all sessions or just a few. If you have questions about the
event or about stewarding, just email me.
See you there!

The final 2006 "Friday Before the Fhirst" gathering for homebrewers has shifted to Sunday night, Dec. 31, so it can also function to welcome the New Year. The event starts at 6 and goes to "next year" at the home of Al Boyce and Beth Williams. Al is the 2006 High Plains Brewer of the Year. Feel free stop by on your way to or from some other party.
The address is:
3208 Edgewood Ave. S.
St. Louis Park 55426
Happy New Year 2007 to all!

Upper Mississippi Mashout Bottle Filling
When: Monday, January 8th 6:30 PM
Where: Chris Smith's House
4733 13th Ave South
Minneapolis MN 55407
Have you ever wanted to enter a contest but all your beer is sitting
in a keg and not a bottle? Are you curious if your latest creation is medal
worthy? Well, you won't have to wait any longer. With the recent opening
of the MHBA club library comes a new counter pressure bottle filler. In
order to put this new treasure to use I will be hosting a bottle filling
event at my home just prior to the club sponsored Upper Mississippi Mashout
competition on Monday January 8th at 6:30 PM. We will provide expert
knowledge on the proper filling techniques along with knowledgeable feed
back from experienced BJCP judges for style placement of your homebrew for
optimal results.
Keep this in mind as you plan you next brewing sessions and maybe
save the last bit of that current brew in your fridge. All you will need
are clean empty bottles and caps and the next potential best of show beer,
mead, or cider. Sanitizer and cappers will be available but if you have a
capper bring it along.
Kegs can be dropped off prior to the filling date to insure clearing of
sediment on Thursday January 4th in the evening. You can also arrange a
different time by contacting me. If you are interested in participating or
volunteering you expertise you can email me at csmitty42(a)yahoo.com.
Thanks,
Chris

Happy Brew Year to all!
MAG MILLS FOR SALE
There has been some interest in the Mag-Mill, made by Jim Magnuson of the
Minnesota Home Brewers Association. Al Boyce has a manual version, and
Steve Piatz has the automated (drill-driven) version, if any have seen
their setups.
I called Jim, and he says he only has the automated version for sale now.
They are driven by a 3/8 or 1/2 drill, and are geared down 7-1/2 to 1. He
said he will sell them to club members for $250 (normally $300).
Anyone interested in buying one from Jim can contact him at
magnusonjim(a)msn.com, or call him at his home at 952-934-2022.

Forget about shopping days. There are only 10 more days until entries are accepted in the Upper Mississippi Mashout!
http://www.mnbrewers.com/events/mashout/
The upcoming holiday weekend is a perfect time to drink some homebrew and evaluate your entries. Don't forget those carboys that you never got around to bottling. There's a rumor that some people have entire rooms filled with carboys.
So make a list. Check it twice. (Pull out the BJCP guidelines while you're sampling and tell the family you're working. Remember, the style that could win you all that swag and Best of Show wooden chalice may not be the style you actually tried to brew.) Find out what's naughty or nice. (The hefeweizen that was so good back in August may taste like clove-flavored acid by now. Mine sure does.)
Take some time to sign up for judging and take part in the growler pub crawl, brewers panel and other perks for judge.

Don't miss the awards banquet. Chef Manny has gone insane this year with all the menu choices for a mere $30 per person, but we're willing to exploit him. Check it out at:

Merry Christmas to all!
>From Rob Groneman: robert.gronemann(a)normandale.edu
Hello all!
This should reach you via SPHBC or through the MHBA.
As you all know, the Upper Mississippi Mashout judging is held Jan 26 and
27.
I am organizing the Beds for Brewers service for the 2007 Upper Mississippi
Mashout. The Beds for Brewers service matches in town hosts with out of town
folks working for the UMMO. It is my hope that this service will stimulate
more out of town folks to make the trip out to judge as we can use the help!
We only ask that you provide a quiet place to sleep, bedding, and a
shower/bath. Anything beyond that is up to you.
I know how generous we in the midwest can be and I know there are a lot of
spare bedrooms, hideaways, standard couchs, and even floor space to
accomodate incoming judges, stewerds, etc.
Send me an email at robert.gronemann(a)normandale.edu or call me at
612-229-7763.
I will assemble a database of available accomodations and prepare for
accomodation requests.
Thanks for your committment to the UMMO.
Rob Gronemann
