My bad--
I shouldn't have made Dawn sound like an ogre, considering that she usually
can't wait to go to Fitger's and Twin Ports, and was more than willing to do
10 CA brewpubs on our recent vacation. I was just saying that this
particular weekend I was warned that we're not supposed to be focussed on
beer, but on getting the work done that we need to. She always puts the
pedal to the metal when we're on our way to Fitger's (her grandfather worked
there for 20+ years, and has the last can ever to come off the line!), just
not this time.
She's a fun-loving beer fanatic! Really!

Subject: June Meeting this Saturday
The June meeting of the Northern Ale Stars is this Saturday, June 11 at the
home of Cindy Spillers and Malcolm Davy. Malcolm personally guarantees the
weather will be beautiful, so bring along lawn chairs to sit outside and
enjoy the beginning of the summer season. Also bring your home brew or, if
you planned poorly and just finished off all your home brew, bring an
expensive imported beer which none of us could afford to by ourselves. Also
bring a snack to share with the crowd. That's it....that's all you have to
bring. The address of the Castle Spillers-Davy is 111 Greenwood Ln in
Duluth
(218-728-5094).
The July meeting will be hosted by Dr. Dave Swenson at his posh country
estate on July 23rd. Not to be outdone by the Spillers/Davy gala bash this
Saturday, Dave promises an afternoon of beer Bocce Ball and merriment.
Since
the July meeting is the traditionally time of the NAS Bocce Ball
tournament,
Dave vows to continue the tradition and calls all who Bocce to gather and
stake their claim to the crown. Beer and cheese will be the food and drink
theme of the day, so plan to bring cheese which matches with the beer you
bring. There may even be a contest to find the best beer and cheese match.
More details will be forthcoming, so stay tuned.
See you Saturday!

Dark Knight vs. Dark Knight Returns
The Maibock is just about gone and with its exit comes some new
seasonals and the return of some of your favorites. We have
simultaneously released the new batch of Dark Knight along with the
Dark Knight Returns, these are beers from the same batch but were
aged in different barrels. The Dark Knight was aged in a first time
use bourbon barrel, so the bourbon note it displays is quite obvious.
The Dark Knight Returns is a second usage barrel (housed the original
Dark Knight) and as such has a reduced bourbon note and much more
balance. These beers are so different that they stand on their own,
worthy of their own tap, and we are offering them side by side for
your comparison. These are the "dessert wines" of the beer world,
beautifully complex and sweet, in fact chocolate or cheesecake
accompany this libation just as well as any port or dessert wine.
********************************************************************
The Dark Knight: For those not yet familiar, the Dark Knight (yes, it
is a Batman reference) is our double fermented Old 8 porter, aged in
a bourbon barrel for 6 months. Double fermented refers to a second
"feeding" of various sugars to increase the alcohol content as well
as bolster the flavor. Chocolate, coffee, charcoal and bourbon,
familiar notes from the previous batch return in this years
incarnation of the DK. Served in a 5 oz pour, the bourbon note from
this tap is very prominent as it is a first time use of a Jim Beam
barrel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The Dark Knight Returns: The same profile as the Dark Knight (above),
however, since this is a second time usage of the barrel the bourbon
note is less prominent and the beer as a result is more rounded and
balanced
--------------------------------------------------------------------
06/07/05: Belgian Golden Ale: Distinctive Belgian flavor, light in
both color and body. We are releasing this light effervescent Golden
ale to aide in refreshment to the oncoming summer weather. With the
rain behind us, our patio is looking to be in full swing and in its
honor we offer you the Belgian Golden Ale.

Greetings home brew fans.
Rick here with a request.
More experienced folks mentioned that chest freezers operate as refrigerators
for about 5 years and then give up the ghost.
Yep. Coils corroded. Mine lasted for 8 years.
Anyone know of a functional but currently not being used freezer that can be
carried by two men and a dog?
Price range - reasonable to free
Moving - provided
Leads appreciated.
Also would accept a walk in refrigerator - if you know of one needing a new
home.

10th Annual Homebrew Tasting 3571 Mud
River Rd. NW
at the Neighborhood Tavern in Effie
Puposky, MN 56667
(218)
243-2450
The 10th Annual Boreal Brewers Homebrew Club tasting of home fermented
beverages will take place at 5:00 pm, Saturday, June 18, 2005 in the tent
bar of the Neighborhood Tavern in beautiful downtown Effie.
This event is open to the public. Eddie Jeff Cahill, a well known local
folk/blues musician dubbed ³the Bard of Beer,² will be providing musical
interludes for the tasting.
A small cover charge will defray the cost of hall rental, entertainment
and supplies only. It is not for the purchase of any alcoholic beverages,
as all home fermented beers, meads and wines are donated. Local brewers,
vintners, cider and mead makers are encouraged to bring some of their
beverages to share. Six or eight 12 ounce bottles of each beverage are
usually enough to offer a sample for everyone.
The purpose of the tasting is to increase awareness of the fine art of
homebrewing and the many beer styles that exist in the world, by giving
away free samples in an informal setting. The tasting will feature a wide
variety of donated home fermented beverages, including beers, wines and
meads. Past tastings have seen an average of 25 different beverages
contributed for sampling.
The Boreal Brewers Home Brew Club was organized in 1991 by Jerry
Bourbonnais and Steve Benson, long time local homebrewers. The club is a
non-profit educational organization dedicated to the advancement of the
art, science and appreciation of homebrewing by providing a forum for the
exchange of homebrewing products, information and expertise. The club
currently has more than 40 members from all across northern Minnesota.
As featured on NBC, CBS, CNN, and even Oprah's show. Also

This is pretty much it:
1) 4 plastic brew buckets w/lids & spigots, three 6.5 gal. and one 5 gal.
2) 3 Airlocks - Tripple Ripple type
3) 1 Hydrometer
4) 1 Floating thermometer
5) 1 JET brand "wing style" cast aluminum bottle capper
7) 1 Brass bottle/carboy washer faucet attachment
8) 1 Refrigerator Controller
9) 1 Dozen maybe more 22oz. long neck brown bottles.
There are some unused caps and one or two books on home brewing. I don't
need much for this stuff - a reasonable sum could easily be arrived at I'm
sure.
Thanks for the reply
