Billabong is located right off 494 and Normandale Boulevard. Local Live Music and Summit at the Uptown Bar In the Uptown area of Minneapolis, there is a fine watering hole called the Uptown Bar. Summit Celebrates Repeal of Prohibition It is difficult to imagine a society in which beer was illegal. That's why on April 7th, Summit will once again celebrate the repeal of prohibition. This year marks the 72nd year of repeal and the brewery marks the occasion through a number of special Summit features at bars and restaurants throughout the Twin Cities area. Look for posters at your favorite hang out and celebrate with a Summit. Summit News Summit People Recently, the brewery added to its sales staff three individuals located in Sioux City, Iowa, Ann Arbor, Michigan and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The brewery welcomes Aaron, Rob and Jason to the team. Summit fans in those parts of the country will soon be seeing more Summit beer on the shelves and in the bars. In March, the brewery will launch its new draft beer quality assurance program. The brewery will hit the road running with a vehicle specially designed to show bars and restaurants the perfect way of serving Summit draft beer. Of course, the individual driving the van will be thoroughly trained in all aspects of draft beer. This is truly an industry first and the brewery is excited at bringing this level of service to our retail partners and our consumers. Summit Maibock Summit Maibock will be hitting the shelves in the next several days as another season passes for Winter Ale. Summit Maibock is a blond bock beer brewed to celebrate spring's upcoming arrival. Summit Maibock is rich and malty with an alcohol content of 7.1%. Summit Maibock will be available through most of May. Summit Limited Release As you may have read in our holiday newsletter, Summit Oatmeal Stout will be available through March. However, we do not expect supplies to last much longer than early April. If you are a Stout fan and we know there are many out there, make sure to have a glass or two before the final keg blows. In place of Summit Oatmeal Stout, the brewery will release its next Limited Release brand, Summit Amber. Summit Amber will be a medium body beer with a copper hue. The hoppiness of the beer will be well-balanced by the beer's maltiness. Available in draft only, look for Summit Amber in your neighborhood bar or restaurant. In the upcoming weeks, look for more information at the brewery's website, MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from "cl.exct.net" claiming to be www.summitbrewing.com, regarding a sneak preview of Summit Amber at the brewery. The brewery would like to invite a special few to taste Summit Amber before the beer is available to the public. More information and a way to register for the party will be available at the web site by mid-March. Craft Beer Growth: What it Means to Us Craft beer has been resurging as the beverage of choice with the brewing of fine styles, both traditional and new, by breweries like our beloved Summit. Between 2003 and 2002, the overall volume of craft beers grew 3.4%, with regional brewers growing 10.9%. This is in an industry where total U. S. beer sales shrunk by as much as 0.3%. Market share changes have been reflecting a significant shrinkage, or stagnation of beer sales for the industrial brewing sector that has been effectively offset by craft brewing. And for 2004 craft brewers have improved even more, with a solid 7 percent more beer being sold; that's 7,023,651 barrels (a barrel is 31 US gallons) total! This has made craft beer the fastest growing segment of the US beverage alcohol industry, according to the Brewers Association; a trade association for the US craft brewers. In 2004 the craft segment sold more new barrels of beer than the much larger import segment of the beer market and reverses the trend between 1996 and 2002 when import volume grew at a faster rate. When you crunch the numbers you will see that 10.5% of this change comes from Regional Specialty brewers. One of the reasons that this is occurring is that discerning customers are demanding more, not less in beer flavor profiles. Craft brewers are successful in respecting and fulfilling their educated requests. Drunken Spicy Shameless Shrimp 24 oz. Summit Grand Pilsner 1/2 cup cider vinegar 2 cups water 2 tbsp. Old Bay Seasoning 2 lbs. large shell-on shrimp (16-20 ct/lb.) 2 tbsp. garlic, minced 2 tbsp. Creole Seasoning* Pour beer, vinegar, and water into a tall one-gallon stock pot. Add Old Bay Seasoning, cover, and cook on high to boil. When the blend is boiling rapidly, add shrimp and cook 2 minutes, until shell turns pink. (The flesh will continue to cook in the shell so don't overcook.) Drain the shrimp in a colander. Toss with garlic and Creole seasoning and serve on a bed of ice. Enjoy with a frosty mug of Summit Grand Pilsner. *Creole Seasoning - Mix the following ingredients: 1/2 cup paprika, 1/2 cup granulated onion, 3 tbsp. ground black pepper, 2 tsp. white pepper, 2 tsp. cayenne pepper, 1/4 cup dried oregano, 1/4 cup dried thyme, 2 tbsp. ground cumin.
