Congratulations to RICK OFTEL, whose Irish Red Ale wowed fans and critics alike at last night's BJCP Class! Rick's efforts have won him the right to represent the Minnesota Home Brewers Association at the American Homebrewer's Association National Club-Only Competition at the end of the month, hosted by MUGZ of Davenport, Iowa.
A close Second Place was STEVE FLETTY, who should, if he's smart, talk the St. Paul Homebrewers Club into allowing him to send his entry on to represent their club.
And an Atta'Boy to Mike Behrendt, Al Boyce, and John Longballa who also entered. John was so excited about the Club-Only competition, that he entered THREE DIFFERENT Irish Reds for the judges consideration!
These five MhBA members are now in the running for MhBA "STYLE OF THE MONTH" Club award, announced at the club Christmas Party in December. The remaining styles for 2005 and their suggested "Brew-By" dates are:
FEB: Cat 15A - Weizen - brew by 1/15
MAR: Cat 17 - Sour Beers (COC) - brew by 1/8
APR: Cat 13E - American Stout - brew by 2/12
MAY: Cat 1-23 - Extract Beers (COC) - brew by 3/12
JUN: Cat 15D - Roggenbier - brew by 4/9
JUL: Cat 14C - Imperial IPA - brew by 5/14
AUG: Cat 16 - Belgian/French Ales (COC) - brew by 6/11
SEP: Cat 3 - Euro Amber Lager (COC) - brew by 7/9
OCT: Cat 12C - Baltic Porter (COC) - brew by 8/13
NOV: Cat 18A - Belgian Blonde Ale - brew by 9/10
DEC: Cat 21B - Christmas Winter/Spiced Ale - brew by 10/8
Styles marked with (COC) are upcoming AHA National Club-Only competition beers - the next one is Sour Beers. If you got going on it THIS WEEKEND, you could still make that one!

out the entry/recipe form and include that with your entry when you drop it
off.
Please consider judging or stewarding if you haven't signed up yet.
Looks like entries are up significantly from last year. We need your help!
Visit: http://www.mnbrewers.com/events/mashout/ to sign up to judge or

Hope to see you at the Mash-Out next week and good luck to all the entrants.

7th Annual Drunk Monk Challenge
Fellow homebrewers and beer judges,
It's nearly spring... that can only mean one thing: It's time for the 7th
Annual Urban Knaves of Grain Drunk Monk Challenge! The DMC is an AHA
sanctioned competition, a qualifying event for the MCAB (Master Championship
of Amateur Brewing), and a leg of Midwest Homebrewer of the Year.
In addition to the 2004 BJCP categories of beer, mead, and cider, we'll once
again feature our own special category, the Menace of the Monastery, for
beer styles with roots in the monastic brewing traditions of Belgium and
Germany: Belgian blonde, dubbel, tripel, pale, strong golden, and strong
dark ales, plus German doppelbock. This year, the winner of Best of Show
Beer will have the opportunity to brew their beer at Walter Payton's
Roundhouse, the Menace of the Monastery champion will have the same
opportunity at Govnor's Pub in Lake of the Hills, IL and the Best of Show
Mead will be made at Bev Art Brewer & Winemaker Supply in Chicago, IL.
The competition will be held on Saturday, March 12th, at Walter Payton's
Roundhouse - America's Brewery, in Aurora IL. Entries will be accepted
between February 21st thru March 5th. Please visit the competition website
for additional information, forms, and on-line registration:
http://www.knaves.org/dmc/
If you are interested in judging at the DMC, please contact Joe Formanek by
e-mail at jformanek(a)griffithlaboratories.com, or by phone at (630) 378-4694.
We will need to know your current BJCP experience level; what styles you are
entering in the competition (if any); and any styles you would prefer to
judge (or not judge). Thanks.
So, its not too late to brew up a batch or two or three to enter.
Cheers!

We will be selecting the MHbA entry to the Irish Red Club Only competition
tonight at BJCP class.
The class tonight will be at Paul Dienhart's home. We will be judging the
beers around 7 pm.
Paul's home is located at:
2344 Nottingham Crt.
Minnetonka, MN 55305
952-544-2831
Directions:
394 to Hopkins Crossroads, go south about 2/3 mile to first true right-turn
lane. Turn right on Fetterly and go to the corner house on the second
street in. The Nottingham Crt. sign is in the front yard.
Those coming from the south could take 169 to Cedar Lake Rd. Go West to
Hopkins Crossroads, then north up the big hill and, as you crest the hill,
turn on your left turn signal for Fetterly, which is 1/3 of the way down the
other side.
Good Luck!
Jonathan
